The past few weeks of back-and-forth on X have felt like going in circles — constantly experimenting with its rules but getting nowhere. For someone trying to leverage X for growth, it’s been incredibly unfriendly.

Coinbase data leak could put users in physical danger: TechCrunch founder
A recent data breach at Coinbase, the world's third-largest cryptocurrency exchange, has raised concerns about user safety after hackers gained access to sensitive information, including home addresses. The breach is estimated to have affected less than 1% of Coinbase's transacting monthly users and may cost the exchange up to $400 million in reimbursement expenses. However, the human cost of the breach may be much higher for users, with some experts warning that it could lead to physical harm or even death. The hackers reportedly bribed overseas customer service contractors to access internal systems, allowing them to steal personal data that could be used in social engineering scams or physical extortion attempts. No passwords, private keys, or account funds were exposed, but the leaked data could still be used to target high-net-worth individuals. With the growing value of cryptocurrency, crypto wealth has become a target for criminals, and experts warn that leaked address data could expose individuals to real-world risks. There have been several reported cases of violent robberies targeting cryptocurrency investors, including a recent incident in Paris where the father of a French crypto entrepreneur was abducted and held for ransom. To prevent similar breaches, crypto exchanges need to adopt a layered defense strategy, including privileged access management, zero trust architecture, and continuous monitoring with behavioral analytics. The rising threat of social engineering schemes, such as phishing scams, is also a major concern, with these types of attacks costing the industry over $1 billion in 2024. Crypto exchanges will need to rethink their security posture to protect against these types of threats, which increasingly target human vulnerabilities rather than technical ones.

Both Microsoft and GitHub announced support for a coding agent that you can assign a pull request and it goes off and sorts it (or at least tries). Microsoft: this is within Copilot. Google: called Jules (uses GitHub)

Feels like Big Tech eating coding startups’ lunch already.

In decentralized finance (DeFi), users have full control over their assets, eliminating the need to trust a central authority. However, this autonomy comes with the responsibility of safeguarding one's private keys. #coinbasehack
Perhaps, this is the current state of Web3:

① Declining trust in CeFi
② Increasing focus on DeFi
③ Diminishing reactions to security incidents

We need to reassess our priorities. #web3 #coinbase #defi

Bitcoin breaks out while Coinbase breaks down: Finance Redefined
Coinbase was targeted in a $20 million extortion attempt after cybercriminals recruited overseas support agents to leak user data for social engineering scams. Despite the attack, investor sentiment remains optimistic, with the Fear & Greed Index remaining firmly in the "Greed" zone above 69. Coinbase saw over $1 billion worth of Bitcoin withdrawn on May 9, marking the highest net outflow recorded in 2025 so far, triggering analyst predictions of a supply-shock driven Bitcoin rally. The company was hit by a $20 million extortion attempt after cybercriminals recruited overseas support agents to leak user data, but less than 1% of Coinbase's active monthly users were affected. The expected remediation and reimbursement expenses range from $180 million to $400 million, as the exchange pledged to repay all phishing attack victims. Institutional demand for Bitcoin is growing, as Coinbase recorded its highest daily outflows of Bitcoin in 2025 on May 9, with 9,739 Bitcoin, worth more than $1 billion, withdrawn from the exchange. Aave, a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, has reached a new record of funds onchain, with over $40 billion in total value locked. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) pushed back its decision on a proposed spot Solana exchange-traded fund (ETF), with the cryptocurrency industry now looking to the deadlines for the Polkadot and XRP-based ETFs in June. Starknet, an Ethereum layer-2 scaling platform, has reached a decentralization milestone and is now the largest zero-knowledge rollup-based network by total value locked.
