Happy Valentine's Day to the person whose faith in my words has never wavered. The books are coming, Sean. I promise.

Morning, lovelies! I offer you the February Folkbyte newsletter, a week late but smartly dressed nonetheless. You'll find it here: csmaccath.com/february2026

Realized I haven't shared an altar shot in a while, and I have an impulse to share my material culture-rich, Pagan view of the sacred today. May the candles be lit in your own sacred space, and may you be a conduit for the numinous.

Gods. I probably got the email telling me it was Bandcamp Friday, but my head is buried in family and child folklore right now, so I spaced it. Anyway, here is my favourite of my own (admittedly few) songs. Hope you like it!

I'm on a deadline for The Storyteller's Guide to Folklore but can't discuss the particulars until I have a book contract in hand, which will be at least three months from now. As a result, the February Folkbyte newsletter will be delayed by a week, but the Special Dispatch should be on time. Cheers!

Wishing you all a blessed Imbolc. In keeping with my own Imbolc tradition, I made the candles I will use in the next year for sacred purposes. Here's a glimpse of the process. What you can't see are the essential oil blends I used: 1:1 juniper/sage, and 3:1 lavender/peppermint.

Using this awesome, myth-inspired metal in the "Curse" chapter of The Storyteller's Guide to Folklore. Thought I'd share it with you.

Sent a poem out the door today. I find when I'm writing poetry or lyrics, the best way to get me past the sticky bits is to hand-write each line until it "clicks" in my brain.

Fare thee well, wee poem! Send good news from the wide, blue world.

I've been thinking a lot lately about how global political upheaval is overshadowing critical climate crisis discussions. It was tough at the best of times to get government and the media to have honest conversations about the climate crisis, but now these discussions are often completely eclipsed.

An important discussion of CBS' shift from climate crisis reporting to lifestyle and cultural debates. Framing is important, and CBS has been a trusted news source my entire life. But as CBS leadership is shifting rightward, its trustworthiness should not be taken for granted any longer.

There's so much to love about the new Star Trek Academy. Nahla Ake as a representation of mature women in power, her acknowledgement that the students have inherited a problem they didn't cause (a nod to the climate crisis), the effortless diversity of the show. I really like it. #StarTrek

I rarely post about politics anymore because I doubt the value of social media. But for those of you who see this note, I stand with Minnesota. I stand for pluralism. I stand for all of us making the world work together and then together saving the Earth, which needs our wisdom so much right now.

This month's Special Dispatch is a discussion of the Maggie Wall Witch Monument near Dunning in Perth. I visited the monument in November and found the votive offerings there interesting from a folkloristic perspective. Read it here:

I was up at sunrise to attend an Eco-Mythology Winter Symposium on Brussels time and snapped this photo while the kettle was heating up. What a fitting way to begin the day.

Not certain why I never read C.J. Cherryh's Morgaine series back in the day, but I'm about to finish it now, and it's a masterpiece. I'm so taken with Morgaine and Vanye, but I especially like Chei as a villain. So utterly unreliable and so utterly convincing.

Hey, SpecList! Would it be helpful for me to set up a feed for new releases? I'm looking for a way to read in advance of awards season, and I thought it might be helpful to set something up that authors/publishers could contribute to when a novel, short story, poem, etc. is released. Your thoughts?
