Polluting waterways is a crime. However, it is a remarkable state of affairs that it is a crime that is overlooked when the people doing so are water company executives earning millions in annual salaries (paid for by the public). And it is government policy to turn a blind eye.
Good LORD ! A crime? Even I didn’t know that and I was a criminal lawyer for years.

“Burcu Yesilyurt…said she thought she was acting "responsibly" when she poured out a small amount of coffee from her reusable cup down the drain rather than risk spilling it on the bus she was about to catch“
So does this mean washing car in street when water goes into street drain is a crime?

My pet gar that I donated to Shedd Aquarium would recognize me and swim over to say hi when I visited her exhibit ❤️🐠

A rare hybrid gar, I raised her since she was 2 inches long, and had to re-home her when I moved to Chicago. I was happy I could visit her in her new home!

“Trashing the living world to stimulate growth is like sacrificing virgins to secure a good harvest: it’s cruel, ignorant and ineffective.”

Can you guess my current research?

🤔 🐟 + 🎣 + 🧜‍♀️ + 🎏 + 🍣 = 👩‍💻 ➡️ 🐟📈😃

We (@gkalinkat.bsky.social and I) just did a social media for scientists workshop with @aquacosm-ecr.bsky.social and thought I should practice what I preach (writing up your current research using only emojis 😅)

The ultimate animal mascot for those having an existential crisis
I’m screaming too, Paddlefish, I’m screaming too.

ALT: Paddlefish feed by swimming with their large mouths agape, using a paddle-like rostrum to detect plankton. The plankton is filtered out of water using gill structures. They appear to be screaming.
Music: Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin.

Question for any ecology peeps that might read my tweets (blues? Do we have a new word for this by now? 😅): Do you know of any courses teaching species distribution modelling techniques (correlative/causative) that you can recommend?
Grateful for any advice (baby pike pic for attention) 🙏🧪

Hi #fishsky - calling all fans of the fish Lota lota or #burbot. What common names do you know for this species (in any language) and why is it called that? I have heard some very funny common names in US English and German for the species and would LOVE to know some more! #fishtaxonomy

I see Freshwater Megafauna Christmas, and raise you Hecht Ruprecht! Germans will get it, Knecht Ruprecht is a partially demonic helper of Santa, carrying a cudgel/rod and a sack to punish naughty children. Figure comes from the same folklore as the better known Krampus. And Hecht means pike. 😁

How do you pay rent? With money, like a sucker? Have you thought about using eels?

In medieval England, people did just that! In fact, eel-rents were very common. In 1100, English landlords collected more than 500,000 eels in rent each year. That's a lot of eels!
