Izzy had feigned annoyance but when Stede had laid out the blankets in the bed of the truck, one by one, it felt like he was erecting a shrine in the back of Izzy’s beat to shit dodge pickup. “Sorry,” Stede mumbles into the darkness. His breath fans out in a cloud of off-white, traveling into nothingness. Izzy watches it, focusing on the way the air dissipates.The smallest droplets become indistinguishable from the sky. A line from Stede’s words into the stars. His back to the earth and his breath across the cosmos. “Doesn’t matter,” Izzy finally answers. His breath doesn’t fan. Doesn’t coalesce and crumble in on itself in the chill of the night. Stede turns on his side to face him, and Izzy feels the moist cloud of Stede’s breath settling against his skin. “Won’t need it anyway. After.” “Mmmm,” Stede hums in agreement. Blue and white and gone just as quickly as it arrived. “So fast,” Stede murmurs, and Izzy snorts. “There will be more,” Izzy says. Millions more. A lifetime multiplied. So many that Stede won’t even see them. They’ll become part of a pattern – burned into his memory of the sky. Izzy scruffs him, turning his head so he can speak into his ear. “I’m going to kill you, you understand?” The shiver that draws out of Stede shouldn’t be so fucking hot, but Izzy came to terms long ago with the kind of man Stede is. They wouldn’t be here otherwise. “Strip then.” Then Stede is under him, nude, his eyes darting between the sky and Izzy, and Izzy thinks Stede may be genuinely insane. He can see the flickers of starlight in his blown-wide pupils. The soft O of his lips. The thrum of his veins. Can pinpoint exactly where to bite without even needing to touch him. But still he lingers. Kisses each warm bit of skin he can reach. Turns Stede’s hand over to nip at his wrist. Sharp fangs like needles brushing light across his lifelines.

The glimmer of a lighthouse covered in soot and sin. "It gets easier," he mumbles. It’s gruff and almost covered by the ocean. "I don't want it to," Stede moans. He hiccups and threatens to curl inward again, and Izzy catches his arm. His thumb is already rubbing, soothing, into the side of Stede’s wrist, and then Stede is pressing into him and Izzy can't do anything but hold him and let him shake his way through it. He knows that once it's passed it will be easier. That life will go on. Not for that son of a bitch, but for Stede. And fr Edward. For the people that matter to him. And that’s more than he could have ever hoped for at any other point in his life. "I keep making mistakes," Stede mumbles into his shoulder, and Izzy wonders if he just means Ned. "Thing about mistakes is you got to live with them. Whether they were wrong or not. Thought you would know that by now you pampered twat." Stede laughs dryly, then gives an ugly sniff. When he pulls back even the dim light can't hide his ruddy cheeks and swollen eyes. "I like your makeup," Stede says -- a peace offering. "And your singing. Complete surprise for me. You're changing." "Yeah well what else can I do?" Izzy says with a shrug. He leans into his wooden leg and focuses on the pressure. Of people supporting him. "We all are, I think." Stede reaches out. Runs a thumb across Izzy’s cheek, just below his eye. The smear of mascara that's painted there comes away on his skin as a dark circle on Stede's fingertips. Izzy stiffens. Stede hums softly and pushes a messy bit of hair behind Izzy’s ear. "Don’t change too much Israel," he says, and then he's turning away. Back towards his cabin. Back towards Edward, deep in sleep. Away from Izzy, standing in the dark, surrounded by the reminders of joy and pain and confusion that still litter the deck.
