Rewatched Sirk’s ALL THAT HEAVEN ALLOWS again last night—such unashamed beauty in a movie about shame. So much atmosphere, not just in the color and light, but in the lenses, the blocking, the pacing, and the moments of punctuation. Russell Metty was a cinema genius.

I think “cold blooded” is inaccurate. His blood was hot—with panic and fear and ignorance and immaturity—symptoms of finding himself in a “job” he’s unqualified for, in possession of tools he isn’t properly trained to use and shouldn’t have, and a defective moral compass. Hot-blooded murder.
