Thank you for saying this, I always feel like I'm a bad person when I grab a reference for art. It's stupid, but a lot of bitching in the general art community made me feel that way.
Professionals use art reference.
Hobbyists use art reference.
Newbies use art reference.
Teachers use art reference.
Everyone uses reference.
Use reference for your art.

Currently wondering if anyone else experiments with fanfiction for the sake of therapy. It's much easier to write and there's a lot less pressure for the narrative to be perfect. I also journal and attend weekly therapy sessions for the record. It's just that actually writing a story helps too.
