There being less nazis in the world is good. Worth celebrating in fact. Yes publicly.

Political violence happens every second of every day in every nation. As long as there is abundance, basics needs not being met is political violence. There's wildly more than enough to go around.

When I was a high school freshman, I wrote an essay about how it was deeply unjust for children to essentially be their parents' property.

I was told I'd understand when I got older.

Well, I'm older now, and I still think it was deeply unjust.

Be careful, friends, when you read accounts of what is happening in LA. We will hear a lot about violence, and it is essential to remember who is defining that term.

A page from Let This Radicalize You by Mariame Kaba and Kelly Hayes, the chapter called "Violence" in Social Movements, page 111. Under the heading "They Will Call You Violent" the text reads: If your tactics disrupt the order of things under capitalism, you may well be accused of violence, because violence is an elastic term often deployed to vilify people who threaten the status quo. Conditions that the state characterizes as "peaceful" are, in reality, quite violent. Even as people experience the violence of poverty the torture of imprisonment, the brutality of policing, the denial of health care, and many other violent functions of this system, we are told we are experiencing peace, as long as everyone is cooperating. When state actors refer to "peace," they are really talking about order. And when they refer to peaceful protest, they are talking about cooperative protest that obediently stays within the lines drawn by the state. The more uncooperative you are, the more you will be accused of aggression and violence. It is therefore imperative that the state not be the arbiter of what violence means among people seeking justice.

The "how do we reach young men?" problem is actually pretty simple. Young men (especially white men) in America are raised with the expectations of 20th century patriarchy. Build a career, become the breadwinner, find a wife, buy a house, have kids, take care of your family. But without generational wealth or beating the odds, this is an impossible dream. It was always harder than the mid-century myth made it seem, but the fact that the American economy became three pyramid schemes in a trench coat makes it nearly impossible. So the young men try, and they fail, because the system is set up for them to fail. And then they feel intense shame, but they don't talk about that, because "real men don't talk about their feelings." And then they come across some social media account where they see some marginalized person talking about how the system is biased in favor of men like them. (which it very much is, though not enough for it not to be a horrible slog.) Their shame flares up, because if the system is biased toward people like them and they still can't live up to their expectations, what does that say about their own character? Right wing influencers are really good at turning this shame into anger and directing it outward, back toward those marginalized people. They're lying, they're cheating, they're cutting the line. The reason you don't have a job is because they secretly control the levers of power using DEI and weaponizing white guilt and shame and blaming patriarchy for their problems. The young men eat this up, because it allows them to tell a much nicer narrative about themselves: their lack of success isn't their fault, it's the fault of all these cheats and crybabies and line cutters. So, what's the answer? Class solidarity. It's very possible to point these guys at the real problem, because they actually have been lied to, and there really is a good reason *other than personal failings* why they haven't found the success they were told was wait…
