New post: Cowardice

The Trump era has shown that our democratic institutions, at every level of government, are completely defenseless against a blustery strongman.

The weather forecast is cold, and there are additional emergency shelter beds available in the City of St. Louis tonight and tomorrow night.

If you or someone you know needs a warm bed tonight, call United Way at 2-1-1

Just for fun, here's what Cara Spencer said when FleishmanHillard left. I guess she hasn't "gotten serious" about investing downtown.

Today I am thinking about how many times I was asked to respond to a quote from then-candidate Cara Spencer about how much the City is failing downtown.

Years ago, St. Louis voters updated the city charter to enshrine our right to protect our public parks.

Last week, developers, lobbyists, our Mayor, and members of our Board of Aldermen used a clever legal workaround to eliminate that right.

Best guess is that Mayor @caraspencer.bsky.social will quietly sign this bill without much fanfare. Then there will inevitably be a lawsuit, and it will end up in the courts, which will cost taxpayers more money than the parking lot could ever be worth.

Today we learned that the only thing standing between a developer’s bulldozer and your favorite city park is 10 votes at the Board of Alderman.
Ald. Aldridge lists the supporters for BB82. Says Berglund, Downtown North CID & others are focused on redevelopment of north area of DT, which is mostly Black folks.

#BOAbb82 approved. (@ 11:10 a.m.)
10 ayes
5 nays. Alders 2, 4, 12, 14 & PBOA.

BREAKING: by a vote of 10-5, the St. Louis Board of Aldermen votes to ignore the city charter, circumvent the will of the voters, and sell a city park to some developers to turn it into a parking lot.

Mayor Spencer is expected to sign the bill, and a lawsuit is expected to swiftly follow.

Tomorrow is today. We'll soon see how broken our Board of Aldermen is.
The Board of Aldermen will vote tomorrow on whether to give themselves and Mayor Spencer broad authority to sell off almost half of the city’s parks.

This is a fun way to find out that the Attorney General subscribes to my Substack.
Does St. Louis really need an elected sheriff?

That’s the question being posed by some elected officials after a judge temporarily stripped Sheriff Alfred Montgomery from his role on Wednesday.
Missouri attorney general says St. Louis sheriff’s office should be abolished
“We don't need a sheriff in the city of St. Louis, but we especially don't need this sheriff,” Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said Thursday.
