You don’t have to be an economist or a policymaker to know that human lives matter more than money. When we reimagine what our economy can be, we need to recognize that the ideas that uphold the economy are something we have the power to build—and the power to take down.

Maya Angelou wrote, “I am the dream and the hope of the slave,” and that is true for millions of us. So how can the dreams of some become the reality of many? With hope. And beyond hope—underneath it, even—a deep knowing that we are worth so much more than where we are.

Without our sacrifices, the wealthy cannot rise. They need something to step on to get to the top, and we can't let it be us anymore. We are worth more than crumbs from their table — we’re worth our share of the prosperity we’ve helped to create.

W.E.B. Du Bois said, “We want the laws enforced...against capitalist as well as laborer; against white as well as black…We want the Constitution of the country enforced.”

Justice for all was the Constitution’s promise. And to the power-holders in America—what is your wealth if not a barrier?
