Thanks to the La Mesa Courier for inviting me to share reflections on my eight years on City Council.

I was the first Democrat elected to our council in decades, kicking the door open for many others. I'm proud of what we have accomplished.

Every single time I submit a report about a dangerous street or intersection, the engineer tells me it can't be fixed because that would impact traffic flow or parking.

The City Council recently declared safety as transportation's highest priority, but the engineers still prioritize traffic flow.

At some point we need to go past our piecemeal approach and elect a slate of officials who deliver a complete network of safe streets, you can't fix this problem one intersection/development decision at a time. Too many people are dying, and it's really bad for quality of life.

We need to do better. San Diego is not progressing on promise for zero traffic deaths.

San Diego has spent $178.9 million on road safety projects over the last five years, but the city's Vision Zero initiative continues to fall short of its goal.

One key metric for how Downtown San Diego is struggling is that there is no dry cleaners in the financial district.

Just a year ago there were two.
