One account describes a retreating soldier: "We sensed somehow that these men had seen hell...He half turned, & indicating the weary straggling figures before him, shrugged expressively, [and said]: 'General fucked up.....Back where they fucking well started.'"

That general was my great grandpa.

And here it is. Finally. Surrounded by some of the scholarship that shaped it. It’s beautiful and such fun to teach - it has given my Year 8 class stories to live inside. A parent messaged me to say history has ‘never been so fun!’ - all I did was tell the class stories from this book.

Looking forward to reading this. So important that "global topics" like enslavement are also taught as local history. Congratulations @colinmccormick.bsky.social and @katieamery.bsky.social for all the work you did on this! Sheffield teachers can do similar with resources I've linked in comments.

Really sad to hear this. Sir Geoff was a great man and personally supportive. His quote, 'We can't change the past, but we can change the consequences of it through better education,' is truly profound. Rest in peace, Sir Geoff Palmer.
We're deeply saddened to hear of the death of Sir Geoff Palmer.

A passionate advocate for justice, he played a key role advising on our reparative justice programme. We're grateful for his support.

Our thoughts are with his family & friends, particularly his daughter & our colleague Susie Mitchell.

I was born in Pakistan and lived there until I was 4. My parents worked there as doctors. While we were there we were very close to a couple called Christine and Mike Miles.
