Philadelphia. Texas Monthly writer-at-large. Ex of Austin, Portland, Cincinnati, Missoula. Music, food, sports (no necessarily in that order).
Was very glad I skipped past it in the mag until last night.
You might want to read this after watching tonight’s Philadelphia-centric Simpsons, but @nanglish.bsky.social did a brilliant job paying tribute to the whole city and not just the tourist hotspots (one particular location made my jaw drop a little). Go Birds!
All the Philly People and Places in The Simpsons’ 800th Episode
From Dalessandro’s to Quinta Brunson to a fictitious park “honoring” Michael Vick. And, oh yes, Wawa.

A definitive new biography about Chris Knox is set to be published in North America next month via Auckland University Press. I am stepping up to help with press and promotion in North America. So, if you are a writer, reviewer, podcaster, record/book buyer, whatever, get in touch.

Top right corner. Can't help but wonder if The Simpsons paid subtle tribute to Dan McQuade in tonight's set-in-Philadelphia 800th episode.

Michelle Haas did not seek to bring her case to the Texas Supreme Court. That's the end of the road. We won.
In 2024, I wrote a story for Texas Monthly about Michelle Haas, whose complaints resulted in the removal of books about slavery from historic Texas slave plantations. Haas sued us, alleging defamation, and was represented by the preferred lawyer of billionaire J.P. Bryan. Today, we won on appeal.

Update from @delucadan.bsky.social. Doesn't mean it's the end but will/can they pay their taxes? Lease dispute with Penn still separate. Of course it's no longer necessary to boycott the venue as there hasn't been anything to go to (Free At Noon aside).

A ‘Cease Operations’ notice was posted on World Cafe Live’s door this week
The West Philadelphia venue has a fairly busy calendar. Whether those shows actually happen depends on the venue paying its taxes.
