Whoop lots of new followers!! Hullo my name is Codey, I'm interested in forest insect taxonomy, management, and conservation. I'm a 5th year PhD candidate at Penn State but really looking forward to coming back to my home in the PNW post-doctorate. I love pokemon, hiking, and my dogs. AMA 🤪
#EntSoc25 Are you neurodivergent (ND), care about someone who is ND, and/or employ ND folks? If so, we invite you to our workshop "Diverg-Ent" on Tuesday from 2-6p! We have EntSoc member panelists of many neurotypes and want to hear from you, and hope to make Entomology a safe science for diversity!

I realize that many scientists are not confident in their art skills. Simple drawings made by scientists who may not be artistically talented are significantly better than the ai art because **the ai stuff is full of errors**. “Bad” but correct figures are better than “prettier” wrong ones.

Quite pleased with this shot of an Urosigalphus braconid wasp I got in central Austin today. I suspect the wasps are emerging from live oak acorns, having parasitized the grubs acorn weevils.
Not many live photos exist of this genus, it seems.

An actual hot take: Too many authors are afraid of editors watering down their voice or whatever and not afraid enough of editors letting you put any old slop on the page.

Y'all I'm making a wish list of entomology reference books (like the Arnett books, Marshall books, etc) for North America. I would love recommendations!

one of my favorite goofy acronyms & pathways!!
Drosophila (fruit fly) researchers are Über-nerds who come up with the best names for genes.
Piwi (pronounced pee-wee) is a protein that interacts with very tiny regulatory RNAs.
It stands for "P-element Induced WImpy testis", because it suppresses a transposon that blocks testis development.

PIWI clade Argonautes are essential for transposon silencing. Without them, animals are sterile due to massive transposon activity.
But how does piRNA-guided target interaction translate into silencing?
PhD student Júlia Portell Montserrat has an intriguing answer

The 'too liberal' is coming from inside the house.
I spoke with the NYT Magazine a while ago but have now heard that an editor said they can't quote me because I'm "too liberal" to be a trusted source.
You know what's always the first example conservatives use to claim I'm "too liberal"?
My work in the 1619 Project, organized by the NYT Magazine.
