Keep the coal in the hole, people. Climate change is the biggest threat to humankind, and to be burning coal in the 21st century is just silly.

“Ideological Sludge”: How New Zealand Is Quiet Quitting Climate Action
New Zealand once stood out as a world leader on climate change. In June it became the first country in the world to abandon a commitment to phase out oil, gas and coal.

A fascinating account of a belligerent Australian coal company in Alberta threatening to sue the govt for asking it to do the same pollution monitoring as the rest of the industry there.
This is the same kind of behaviour we saw with Bathurst over ECAN's regulation

And let’s not forget those incredibly endangered snails are STILL in a fridge in Reefton: every time they try to re-establish them in a new habitat, it fails. This looks more like extinction than restoration.
#nzpol
🤐 #BathurstResources “restoration plan” is BS and we all know it. Last time they promised this we ended up with the decimation of the rare giant snail Powelliphanta Augustus & destruction of all of its natural habitat.

I have long said that the ideological dogma at the political intersection of roads, cars/trucks and petroleum will drive NZ to economic collapse unless we diversify and plan for resilience. Roads being destroyed faster than we can repair them is not sustainable.

NZ’s over-reliance on roads for freight means natural disasters hit even harder. But there is a fix
Despite thousands of kilometres of coastline, 93% of domestic freight is transported on New Zealand’s roads. But shipping – and rail – can help build resiliency.

New Zealand has a massive tree/climate problem.
You cannot permanently offset fossil fuel emissions by planting trees. The science sees trees as an "impermanent" sink for fossil carbon, which remains in the atmosphere for as much as 10,000 years.
