Is it ominous that a spotted lanternfly flew onto my shoulder upon arrival at National Airport? 🤔

I'm looking forward to a day when most nuclear policy things I read stop invoking bad parallels in the fashion & design worlds.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Today's reminder to check your registration, #vote often, be ready to troubleshoot. No change in my ID, address, registration etc for several years. I consistently vote. Yet due to a small error the poll workers had to call the Board of Elections to be sure I could vote. Grateful for them doing so 🇺🇸

Hype doesn't help policy makers make hard decisions in pursuit of maintaining effective deterrence. Thx @DefenseNews for posting our piece highlighting 3 misleading themes bubbling up in DC & 3 areas of agreement on #nuclear policy that we can lean into more. www.defensenews.com/opinion/2025...
For nuclear deterrence, US policymakers must rely on facts, not hype
Opinion: Three chief narrative claims threaten to send Washington down costly, inefficient and risky nuclear policy paths, the authors of this op-ed argue.

The #science & #tech base in the United States, and the people who drive it, are some of our most important national security assets. Keeping the National Labs well resourced & driven toward bold visions must remain a top priority. (& thanks to Sandia for an educational display that can be photo'd!)

And now Draper, just wow! 🇬🇧
Though now, I hope, Rune prevailing after that is even more symbolic 🇩🇰 🎾
Russia and Belarus defeated Poland and the US to reach the Indian Wells final. I’m not happy. Guess why. But then it’s just tennis, isn’t it?

So fun to think about a nation I love with my teammate @jacksondupont.bsky.social. Georgia's collaborative approach to all things #bio has shaped global security for decades. The politics of both our nations will now deeply influence whether & how that is sustained in the years ahead.

Brilliantly stated by @andrewfacini.com. We need to attract & retain top talent in #nuclear matters to pursue any strategy. An essential requirement for US strength & security no matter what.
☢️ New from @andrewfacini.com: "the gutting of nuclear weapons-enterprise agencies serves as a loud reminder that there is no secure pursuit of deterrence without the maintenance of systems that also offer arms-control possibilities."

➡️ Read more on why taking aim at DOE & NNSA benefits no strategy:
Cutting the Nuclear Weapons Enterprise Serves No Strategy - The Council on Strategic Risks
Weakening the enterprise benefits neither a build-up or build-down approach and potentially ties the hands of negotiators.

I'm off work today so I can be a bit political, though part of why I'm on Team @benwikler.bsky.social is b/c we'd be better off if both parties embraced a lot of the things he is fighting for.

I might have inched it a tad closer, but that's part of what's great about @thebulletin.org & this annual process. It gets us all thinking & talking.

Great to see friends today after the announcement & sending gratitude to the Bulletin team for all you do 👏🏻

Cheers to these government agencies for soliciting public input on very complex policy topics 👏🏻 The need to understand & manage risks/optimize benefits from data usage and AI applications in #bio and #chemistry is only growing -- and quickly.
🏛️📝 CSR is grateful for opportunities from DOJ & NIST to provide expert input on government handling of biological data & AI. We are pleased that our recommendations on compliance monitoring and proteomic data were adopted in the Final Rule on Sensitive Personal Data, published Dec 27. | Learn more:

Tim's quote at the end of this is one I hope sticks. It was quite a moment, but we knew even back then that too many policy makers would continue trying to cut chem & bio weapons elimination innovation and resources. Great to see this article drawing attention to its importance.
