Lighting in a #3d #videogame makes all the difference! It took me over 3 weeks of my spare time to get global illumination working in Unity but it was worth it.

I've been making devlogs for years, you'd think I'd get used to stopping the Clomper🐞 and turning down the boilers. I accidentally drove this one off a cliff into a crevasse!

Oh my. I don't know what to say. Ben was a huge part of the YouTube game dev community and a superb musician too. I knew he had been fighting cancer (he did a brave video) but he ploughed on regardless.

My heart goes out to his family. Fuck cancer.

💡Before and after lighting update!

While the inside of the Clomper is supposed to be a dim and warm like a mechanical Victorial library, it was a little too dark in places, which made the diegetic UI hard to read and there were nasty overexposed light spots.

💡Global Illumination problem update!

I can either have surface contributing
OR
Emissive light.
BUT
Not both without dark patches.

Anyone know why?

Still struggling with @unity.com adaptive probe volumes. No matter how much effort and detail I put into the post, it's just being ignored on the forums. I'm really doing my best to understand it all but it doesn't make sense.

It's been a weekend of struggling with Adaptive Probe Volumes and global illumination in Unity. The Unity docs are written from the POV of someone who already understands everything.

Do you know of any good resources to get rid of these patches or explain why the probes are dark?

🧪🔥 A failed #gamedev experiement!

Originally, you click once to make one pipe.

What if pipes were made fast holding down the mouse button?

It's then hard to make pipes accurately as one slightly long button press makes three!

But there's a bigger reason not to fast create pipes... 1/2

⚠️ Multiplayer adds lots of testing time to your game! 🎮

All the pipes are damaged below because I got the synchronisation order wrong (again). It's ok the host. It's ok if a client was connected when you took damage but if you join *after* that. You have to test everything 3 times!|

Thing about "holiday season" is that I have all my usual work and the work needed to make Christmas successful!

Testing player feedback by running up two Clomper clients and trolling myself by trying to simultaneously putting different pipes in the same place!

This is the kind of testing that makes multiplayer game development take so long.

😈 CURSED! 😈

Teaching myself vertex shaders with some random displacement. This is still playable right? I manage to crash the Clomper in this clip but it's difficult to tell!

Freya posts another hypnotic gif. That's 3 hours lost. 🤩
ooo it's so interesting seeing how dual quaternion splines solve extreme rotational differences!

I made it prefer the shortest path within the quaternion double cover, so when control points pass the 180 degree switch with its neighbors, the path also changes its shape!
