Whenever you hear someone sneer about scientific research that seems useless to them — “they’re studying the spit of lizards?!” — remind them that’s exactly how we got Ozempic.

How a Canadian scientist and a venomous lizard helped pave the way for Ozempic - National | Globalnews.ca
In 1984, Dr. Daniel Drucker, an endocrinologist from the University of Toronto, discovered a hormone that helped pave the way for popular diabetes drugs such as Ozempic.

Sharpest @volts.wtf episode in a while, Dave is transcendent on utilities and the grid. The “longest Volts in history” is well worth the listen. Let’s double the grid and quadruple the throughput with rate based assets to improve reliability, safety, and affordability!
Today on Volts: fans of distributed energy have lots of complaints about utilities, but Pier LaFarge thinks they're the only institutions that can build it out fast enough. He wants them to procure it like any other energy resource. We talk it over ... extensively.

Should we put utilities in charge of distributed energy?
The grid needs to double in size - and the solution might be giving utilities control over DERs.

I got a battery upgrade on my 10-year old EV, a LEAF 🍃. It now has the range of a premium new EV - no extra space required, such is the rate of battery tech improvement, and the old battery will be installed in my house, to allow all my power to come from solar or cheap and cleaner night electricity

Forgot to mention that this dude also swears off dishwashers? Which use much less water than washing by hand? We’re going to solve the climate crisis by leaving nobody behind. We’re going to massively increase energy efficiency but we’re not gonna solve the climate crisis with suffering & austerity.

Charging lithium-ion batteries at high currents just before they leave the factory is 30 times faster and increases battery lifespans by 50%.

This counterintuitive conclusion has the potential to further lower battery costs.

Really, really (really) excited about this and Fervo generally. When I think about a decarbonized grid in Western PA, it’s going to be hard without new nuclear or continued breakthroughs from @timlatimer.bsky.social and team! 🔌💡
