Very interesting to consider when we think as archaeologists about landscapes and memory
Fascinating thread on our bucolic perceptions of the (recent) past agricultural landscape & the reality. Came across this time & again in writing new book, #GhostsoftheFarm. No denying we’ve decimated so much wildlife in pursuit of food production, but Shifting Baseline Syndrome is a complex beast!
In 1956 some of this scene was already mainly memory in England, Corncrake had become rare with horse drawn mechanical reaper. Corncockle was a seed contaminant, better seed cleaning it was gone, Cornflower and other arable weeds like poppy started to be eradicated by 2,4-D introduced in 1946.

Our study further reveals the marvelous and often surprising complexity of our planet. It reminds me of how difficult it is to predict the future and how our own actions are creating a profoundly uncertain world and future.

Saying “we will never know” (but here is what I think, and why) is the most powerful thing. It says, we can’t be sure, what do you think? A 7 year old child hearing it might think to themself, I can work that out. And maybe, one day, they will
More archaeological sites should take note of the approach to interpretation at Flag Fen. I think it's incredibly important to present a range of hypotheses, the evidence informing them and to recognise that 'we will never know' 🙌 🧵3/
