We are currently working to refine our estimates and would love to connect with conference organizers or participants.

It’s a collective effort to understand how academic travel impacts the planet – and what we can do about it. πŸŒ±βœˆοΈπŸ“‰

That’s why we need your help! πŸ™

πŸ‘‰ Have you organized or attended a large (>1000 participants) conference in psychology or behavioral medicine between 2023–2025?

πŸ‘‰ Can you help us retrieve missing data or point us to other relevant events?

Please reach out! πŸ’Œ

We relied on publicly available data from over 20 conferences to estimate travel emissions.

But there’s a catch… πŸ•΅οΈβ€β™€οΈ

Some events were hard to identify, and some organizers didn’t reply. So we might be underestimating the actual footprint.

On average, one international in-person conference visit emits 1.26 tCO2eq per researcher.

That’s 55% of the 2.3 tCO2eq annual carbon budget per person that would keep us on track with the 1.5Β°C target of the Paris Agreement (Gore, 2021). 😬

1/ 🚨 New preprint alert!

We (@lisawarner.bsky.social @ajamesgreen.bsky.social and myself) estimated the carbon footprint of air travel associated with >20 international conferences (2023–2025) in psychology & behavioral medicine.

Spoiler: it’s a lot. πŸ›«πŸŒπŸ§

🌎 4/ Bottom line:
Feeling deeply connected to nature helps people stay committed to the environment, beyond political games.

In times of polarization, nurturing ecological identity might be key to stronger climate action... 🌿

πŸ” 3/ Across two studies, we found:
No environmental policy was perceived as equally likely and credible when proposed by left- or right-wing parties.

People with a πŸ’ͺ ecological identity supported pro-environmental policies even when they perceived them as politically opposed to their own views.
April 17, 2025 at 3:14 PM
πŸ“š 2/ We studied how political orientation and ecological identity interact to shape support for environmental policies.

➑️ Do people reject good some policies because they come from the "wrong" party?
➑️ Can a strong ecological identity to overcome this?
April 17, 2025 at 3:09 PM
✏️ 1/ Excited to share our new research:
"Right, left or green: what matters the most for supporting environmental policies?"

We asked: Is it your politics, or how political you think a policy is, that drives your support for environmental policies? πŸŒ±πŸ”΅πŸ”΄

Our walking/bluetooth meeting was lovely @lauramkoenig.bsky.social despite my less sunny environment 😝! #Paris
The sun was finally back for one day, so I decided to move (pun intended) a meeting outside - powered by bluetooth headphones. Still had to bundle up because it was freezing. Thank you for joining me on my walk @claudiaterane.bsky.social! #AcademicSky

It shows estimates of greenhouse gas emissions caused by travel to @European Health Psychology Society (EHPS) conferences, and offers two solutions for preserving not only human health, but also the health of the planet: (🧡1/4)

What a great way to start 2025 by promoting more conversation and more action about scientists' carbon footprint!

What did we learned?
- Conferences with online options πŸ’» had reduced emissions β†˜οΈ compared to only on-site conferences.
- The choice of venues (e.g., cities well connected by train) can facilitate ground travel πŸš‚ 🚌
