I love people who want to save things, big things like the planet, of course, but small things, too. There is such tenderness in saving small things... (like the lone surviving apple tree in a now-vanished orchard, as in my recent middle-grade novel THE LAST APPLE TREE).
”If we want to save the things we cherish from time’s ravages, then we need to preserve them, conserve them.”

Wellesley College Professor @ehatmat.bsky.social’s new book ’What to Save and Why’ was recently reviewed in the New York Book Review.

What we conserve and why—art, heirlooms, animals, even the planet—are increasingly urgent questions.

A preorder link is live! 😊 If you would like the book and can preorder, that is a *huge* help, but if you can't, I completely get that. The best thing you can do in that case is request that your university or local library orders a copy - that helps sales, too! mcfarlandbooks.com/product/news...
There is a book cover and an official title for the #Newsies book, and I am so incredibly delighted!!! ❤️ Preorder links should be available very soon, and I will share those as soon as I can.

One of my recent books was criticized for showing sympathy for its problematic parental characters. So I was glad when a writer friend shared this quote from Walt Whitman: "The poet judges not as a Judge, but like sunlight falling around a helpless object." Yes! #writing #kidlit

Happy Arbor Day! This recent book of mine culminates in an Arbor Day school assembly, fitting for a story that stars an heirloom apple tree, lone survivor of a vanished orchard, and the secrets concealed in its bark and branches.
