Our kids don't deserve to live with gun violence. Neither do yours. Neither do kids anywhere on Earth.

“The children are always ours, every single one of them, all over the globe; and I am beginning to suspect that whoever is incapable of recognizing this may be incapable of morality.” Baldwin.

There were so many highlights of #NCTE25 but the peak was absolutely presenting alongside my 7th grade English teacher. Here’s to the roots running so deep.

see you there!
Join us for our December slow chat! This will be an informal #literacies touchpoint before the start of the holidays. Let's continue the conversation!

A6: After doing a photovoice project with my students as an elementary teacher, I learned so much about their #literacies through the images they took (even though this wasn't even the original project aim!). With that in mind, would love to keep experimenting with photo journals in the classroom!

A3: I asked folks in my English Ed methods class to speculate on the future of literacy education and their role in that future via story. I noticed how the speculative gave them space to really consider not just what they perceive as wrong in the field but also how they challenge them. #literacies
Q3: What critical #literacies have you seen in fandom spaces? Here are some examples of issues we've identified!
November 19, 2025 at 1:34 AM
A5: I think about this tension so much when thinking about arts-based #literacies more broadly, and I see one path forward as empowering students to lead the design of a unit or activity so they can bring the practice to life in context. I think a plug and play approach can often lead to deadening!
November 19, 2025 at 1:38 AM
A4: I've used a zine fair model with children before and I see lots of cool intersections with this idea! One element I love is how children and youth are framed as experts in their fandoms, and have an authentic audience for sharing their #literacies
November 19, 2025 at 1:30 AM
A3: On the "fandoms" channel on the Write4Change Discord server, it is so cool to see youth imagining characters in ways that disrupt their representation in the media, especially imagining and drawing characters in queer relationships and gender-bending. #literacies
November 19, 2025 at 1:22 AM
A2: I love this question! As a teen, I loved scrolling on arts and creative blogs on Tumblr and Pinterest, and that has no doubt contributed to my interest in the intersections between the arts and the digital and arts based #literacies of youth.
November 19, 2025 at 1:14 AM
A1: I am continually inspired by Dr. Grace D Player's work with the Simmering Spices art collective, thinking about the relational, curatorial and imaginative #literacies of Girls of Color. As an arts-based scholar, this is the kind of meaningful participatory work I really aspire to.

A6: For this question, I return to the Bell quote that @anna-phd.bsky.social and @esp-phd.bsky.social evoked to start the chat: "We exist only in relation." In this moment, those relations are vital to our survival. I look forward to a continued #literacies community that exists far into the future.

A6: As an arts-based researcher interested in digital #literacies, I am super interested in a #literacies future that uses art as a way to critique and imagine the relationships we have with tech. As an extension, curious about how making/sharing artwork could make its way into #literacies chats!
October 29, 2025 at 12:46 AM
A5: I always love when these chats can bring together scholars and practitioners/K-12 educators to discuss a shared interest. AI #literacies immediately comes to mind, but there are so many other topics which might bring together emerging research as well as useful classroom resources!
October 29, 2025 at 12:38 AM
A4: I think the biggest challenge is getting more people on this platform for the chat because it is still relatively new. It makes me think of the "bring a friend" idea at gyms, classes, etc. We could try that here! This month's chat has been a great step in that direction. #literacies
October 29, 2025 at 12:30 AM
A3: I have loved learning from @anna-phd.bsky.social about the first #literacies chats, and the seminal papers and ideas that have come out of this space. Here's to many more to come!
October 29, 2025 at 12:22 AM
A2: I am newer to these, so it was the most recent chat for me! After discussing censorship with other scholars, as well as literacy practitioners, I have been seeing it everywhere and considering its applications on digital platforms. Loved that discussion with @drannd.bsky.social! #literacies
