Politically conservative, Socially progressive (My politics are complex and nuanced.) Retired from a career that went many places I didn't expect. Avid cyclist. Married to the same brilliant woman since 1982. I'm comfortable with cognitive dissonance.
It's all just chimp poop now...

I was in a conversation with a couple of friends of long standing (who have different political viewpoints from mine) and we agreed that, at a certain level, people are still chimpanzees who throw poop at each other when we're upset. A pleasant and interesting talk.

We have reached the point where people can be murdered for their opinions, or where they work, or their ethnicity, and some segment of the population will be OK with it, because they can blame it on "the other side."

I came over to BlueSky because I thought there was hope of a social media platform where people could discuss, disagree, and still be decent people about it.

Lately I'm seeing a lot of dehumanizing, categorizing, speech, of the sort that turns another human being into a target.

Kennedy's HHS is rumored to be linking Autism to Tylenol use during pregnancy, according to the WSJ.

SO, here's the question:
Who in the Administration short-sold Kenvue (the company that makes Tylenol) this week?

I haven't been on in a while, for personal reasons, but when I saw this article from the Third Way think tank, I thought it just might start a fruitful discussion:

Those of you who know me well know that I've been pretty active in #BikeMS, an annual series of cycling events in support of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

MS is an autoimmune disorder, in which the myelin sheath that covers the nerves in the central nervous system develops gaps.

As I look around, I see two kinds of Progressives, and two kinds of Conservatives.

The first kind of Conservative fights like hell to keep things as they were, or as they remember them.

The first kind of Progressive fights like hell to change something, or everything.

Ok, time to speak up. CNN and the BBC have been repeating a Hamas lie that 31 Palestinians were killed by the IDF at a food distribution point run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

For context, the GHF has distributed over 4.5 million meals this week, without incident & without Hamas.

So, earlier I had made some posts about the importance of progressives turning down the vitriol, in order to avoid pushing Trump voters further into MAGA-dom. Ultimately, to flip some significant seats in Congress and end this insanity.

I got shouted down by people who said they were unreachable.
Per a family member in East Tennessee who works at a BBQ joint, the Trumpers at work are MAD about Trump and Vance’s attack on Zelenskyy + the mass firing of veterans who work for the federal government.

So that’s a data point

Interesting idea: Don't disengage from MAGA friends.

Why? I've been reading "Revenge of the Tipping Point" by Malcolm Gladwell.

In Chapter 4, he points out that in study after study, when the number of dissident voices in a group reaches 25% - 30% the thinking of the group as a whole shifts.

As a political "classical" (i.e. non- MAGA) conservative, I find myself in hearty agreement with this entire article:

I'll believe there's a Congressional response when I see Articles of Impeachment being voted on.

Anything else is just more performance art.

So, what does a "non-MAGA" (i.e. genuine) Conservative believe in? There are a few differences, but this seems to be generally true:
- Belief in the rule of law, and the Constitution.
- Belief that those things should be interpreted to preserve individual liberty.

Hey, does anyone know of a Canadian or Mexican equivalent of AliExpress? IIRC: Under US law, one can import up to $800 worth of goods per year for personal use and not pay tariffs.

I think it already is.

But seriously. Don’t call them names. We want the door open for them when they realize the mistake they made.

Well, this will be interesting. For only the 2nd time since my late teens, I am clean-shaven, a result of forgetting to put the guard on when trimming my beard.

Happy Sunday Bluesky!

I'm doing a couple of #BikeMS events this year, so I'm reaching out to my peeps here for sponsorships. It's tax-deductible, and every penny goes to #MultipleSclerosis research and support.

shorturl.at/uk3pH for how.

Ugh... I hate being sick. Can't (shouldn't) work out, and it messes up my training schedule for this summer's big bike rides. Nothing to do about it but rest, recover, and figure out the adjustments to my training schedule.

Ok, here's my idea:

Elect as many Democrats and Never-tRump Republicans as we can in the midterms, and wait for tRump to do something impeachable.

Who knows, we might actually get a Congress willing to do it's <expletive> job.
January 23, 2025 at 2:24 PM
To quote Sarah Isgur: "Congress, do your job!"
HELL YEAH! Congressman Jim McGovern TORE Speaker Mike Johnson a new for saying it wasn’t “his place” to question Trump’s January 6 pardon.

“Not your place?? WHO THE HELL’S PLACE IS IT?” He said.

“How about you stand with the officers who protected you and not a reality show wannabe dictator.” 💙
