I track campaign finance in Texas, connecting the “what” to the “why” with my wife, @mentack.bsky.social

Lots of talk about numbers, campaign finance, a spotlight on Christian nationalism, and some punk rock.

Read this deep dive into the recent Texas SD9 runoff. It gives some hope.
A Democrat won Texas Senate District 9 in Tarrant County. The narrative surrounding the win is it was Republicans who did it (because I guess it’s always about Republicans).

I looked at the data to get to below the surface of that take and recenter things.

This is a very good explanation of why voting in Republican primaries in Texas doesn’t mean a voter is a Republican.

@katherinestewart.bsky.social wrote a piece on Substack today, “The American Conservative Movement Has Failed”. It’s a really insightful piece (as is pretty much all of her work), but the line in the image hits the 🎯 beautifully.

I wrote up a new piece on Substack looking at the campaign finance reports for Leigh Wambsganss in her run for Texas Senate District 9.

Give it a read at open.substack.com/pub/christac... (or link in the bio) and more importantly, VOTE FOR Taylor Rehmet.

This is great. For one thing, protesters are safer in the presence of National Guard soldiers by orders of magnitude. Second, the approach embraced by the Minnesota Army National Guard makes ICE and CBP look so incredibly small and weak.
Minnesota National Guard members have arrived at a federal building and were directed to distribute donuts, coffee, and hot chocolate to anti-ICE protesters. Guard members were issued reflective vests so they would not be mistaken for federal agents.

This went onto the lawn of the Tarrant County Courthouse yesterday. Tarrant County Commissioners Matt Krause and Manny Ramirez, and County Judge Tim O’Hare voted to align with white Christian nationalist ideology and impose one faith front and center over any others (or none).

Every single time I hear a politician celebrating “rugged individualism”, it makes my eyes roll 🙄 so hard in my head I almost fall over.

I wrote about the myth this morning. Give it a read and let me know what you think! open.substack.com/pub/christac...
Exposing the Myth of Rugged Individualism
Rugged individualism sounds cool and inspiring, but it relies on a myth that ignores how societies actually function and who gets left behind.

"When these titles disappear from shelves, it’s an attempt to erase experiences, reshape history, and force a narrow worldview onto entire communities."

What's that worldview? White christian nationalism. See it. Name it. Fight it.

If there was any question why so many in Tarrant County can’t wait to vote for a new County Judge in 2026, Tim O’Hare reminded everyone with his performance at the 12/9/25 Commissioners Court.

Tim O’Hare has got to go. (And Manny too!)

I've only seen the wide version of Nydia Cardenas’ launch video shared, but I think the vertical version is great too, showing off a "tight focus on what matters for Tarrant County, its people.

Think about the potential of a 20% or more sales tax on everything you buy. Even your groceries which are exempt from sales tax today. Does that feel “affordable”?

Greg Abbott and other R’s are advocating that we should eliminate property taxes. It sounds cool, but they are picking your pocket.

I can remember the phone calls I had with Glenn Rogers back in 2019 and 2020, laying out what the motivation was for Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks. We walked through Christian nationalism and 7 Mountains / Dominionism. Rogers knew all of this before going to Austin as a member of the Texas House.

On the 11/24 817 Podcast, they asked folks to define “The Fort Worth Way” & followed up with how do we change it:

“Old money talks and everyone else listens”
“Business as usual”
“This is what we did yesterday and this is what we’re going to do tomorrow”
“Decisions behind the scenes…to have control”

This is how Nydia Cárdenas sees it: Doing things the way they’ve always been done and trying to preserve power. We get out of it by listening differently and asking better questions.

On the 11/24 817 Podcast, they asked us to define “The Fort Worth Way” and followed up with how do we change it.

This is how I see it: The top makes all the decisions (behind the scenes) and throws the rest of us crumbs to keep us quiet. We change raising our voices together and voting them out.

This is how Mendi sees it: Appeasing the status quo, looking nice on the surface, while leaving people behind. We change it by speaking truth to power, even when it's uncomfortable.
