I track campaign finance in Texas, connecting the “what” to the “why” with my wife, @mentack.bsky.social
Started http://seeitnameitfightit.com.
Lots of talk about numbers, campaign finance, a spotlight on Christian nationalism, and some punk rock.
I can remember the phone calls I had with Glenn Rogers back in 2019 and 2020, laying out what the motivation was for Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks. We walked through Christian nationalism and 7 Mountains / Dominionism. Rogers knew all of this before going to Austin as a member of the Texas House.

On the 11/24 817 Podcast, they asked folks to define “The Fort Worth Way” & followed up with how do we change it:

“Old money talks and everyone else listens”
“Business as usual”
“This is what we did yesterday and this is what we’re going to do tomorrow”
“Decisions behind the scenes…to have control”

On the 11/24 817 Podcast, they asked us to define “The Fort Worth Way” and followed up with how do we change it.

This is how Nydia Cárdenas sees it: Doing things the way they’ve always been done and trying to preserve power. We get out of it by listening differently and asking better questions.

On the 11/24 817 Podcast, they asked us to define “The Fort Worth Way” and followed up with how do we change it.

This is how I see it: The top makes all the decisions (behind the scenes) and throws the rest of us crumbs to keep us quiet. We change raising our voices together and voting them out.

On the 11/24 817 Podcast, they asked us to define "The Fort Worth Way" and followed up with how do we change it.

This is how Mendi sees it: Appeasing the status quo, looking nice on the surface, while leaving people behind. We change it by speaking truth to power, even when it's uncomfortable.

Mike Morath from the Texas Education Agency met with Turning Point to discuss a formal partnership about putting chapters of an organization infused with white Christian nationalist ideology on high school campuses across Texas. Days later Dan Patrick offered to put forth $1 million to get it going.

I want people to know that Nydia Cardenas isn’t just crazy smart and compassionate, she’s also funny.

If Mattie Parker and Council had bucked the Trump admin, this is Nydia’s take on the “Truth” Trump would have posted. 😂

She’s going to be running for Tarrant County Commissioner Precinct 4!

Arlington City Council is considering an amendment to the anti-discrimination chapter of city code to remove the terms “sexual orientation” and “gender identity/expression” as protected classes.

Show up. Stand up. Speak out against this at the Arlington City Council meeting at 6:30pm on 11/18.

Don’t forget that Arlington, TX, will be voting to remove protections for LGBTQ+ people from city statutes on 11/18. This isn’t about 💰. This is just a very wrong opinion from a city attorney.

If you think this is 💩, you should show up to Arlington City Council on 11/18 at 6:30pm and tell them. 📢 🗣️

Hang on. You are telling me that we could have a Tarrant County Commissioner in Precinct 4 with incredible business experience, who understands the impact small business has in a community, who can bring real data to make decisions? SIGN ME UP!

Nydia, we can’t wait for the official announcement!

Imagine having a Tarrant County Commissioner in Precinct 4 who can break down big ideas into manageable pieces and can then focus on problem solving and solutions for regular every day people.

Enter Nydia Cardenas.

In a mater of months the richest man alive, who was not elected, has cut USAID and now 700,000 are dead. The billionaire president is doing everything possible not to give 42 million people access to food. Just in case you’re wondering what the history books will focus on.

What is the 817 Gather about? How about we let Nydia explain! (From the 8/4/25 817 Pod)

Does this sound good? I’ll drop a link in the next post and you can take that step toward getting into community, doing real life things around Tarrant County.

This segment from Roland Martin Unfiltered really captured the moment after Zohran Mamdani won in NYC.
“He connected with the hearts, minds, and pocketbooks of voters”
“I see you, I hear you, I value you”
“That’s what we need to continue to see the Democratic Party do if they want to win”

With the state power grab privatization motivated takeover of Fort Worth ISD in full swing, I revisited the 9/8 episode of the 817 Pod with Ale Checka. I did a supercut of the multitude of important things she had to say. Give it a watch. And these are the people we should be listening to: Teachers

We have a mordida governor. It doesn’t have to be that way. We could elect a governor who will be for the working people, who will make sure our tax dollars go to support our local public schools, to improve our healthcare. But we have to vote, organize, and get loud! 📢

Did you know DFW airport is jointly owned and governed by the City of Fort Worth and the City of Dallas?

Workers from the airport came to Fort Worth City Council on 11/4 asking for a livable wage. Pay starts as low as $10 an hour. We can and should do better.
