Martin Luther King, Jr. was 39 years old when he was gunned down in 1968. While many learned about his push for Civil Rights, King also worked for economic justice. Before King’s death, he was in Memphis supporting a sanitation strike to promote higher wages and safer working conditions.

Born today in 1979: singer and actress Aaliyah Dana Haughton. Known simply as Aaliyah, the R&B songstress made her debut in 1994 with Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number. She released two more albums before dying tragically in a plane crash in 2001 at just 22.

But it’s interconnected with the others, & it helps us understand why we’re here, what we’re fighting, & how we resist. +

2026 year marks the 250th anniversary of the country’s quest for independence. As the nation prepares to celebrate, many Americans are wrestling with how - or if - they should participate. This isn’t the first time residents have faced such a quandary.

Today in history, 1919: 26th President Teddy Roosevelt dies. Assuming the presidency in 1901 after the assassination of President McKinley, Roosevelt became the youngest man to ever take the oath.

Today in history 1933: construction on the Golden Gate Bridge begins. Plans had been under development for decades, but it wasn’t until 1932, when San Francisco-based Bank of America agreed to finance the project through buying bonds that construction could begin. The bridge opened on May 27, 1937.
