Rela­tions with the United States have rup­tured. Once-solid cli­mate policies appear fra­gile or aban­doned. Inter­na­tional cooper­a­tion feels uncer­tain at best. And yet, I am optim­istic, deeply so. That optim­ism comes not from denial, but from train­ing. I hold a mas­ter's degree in physiology, where we were taught to under­stand equi­lib­rium, dynamic states, feed­back loops, and tip­ping points. Liv­ing sys­tems are rarely stable. They res­ist change until sud­denly they do not. When thresholds are crossed, change can be rapid, non­lin­ear, and irre­vers­ible. For the past 25 years, my email sign-off has read: “If you want to be incre­ment­ally bet­ter, be com­pet­it­ive. If you want to be expo­nen­tially bet­ter, be cooper­at­ive.” That prin­ciple applies as much to eco­nom­ies and geo­pol­it­ics as it does to bio­logy. It is also why I believe the trans­ition to a cli­mate-safe eco­nomy can still hap­pen, and far faster than many assume. Why? Because Cit­izens' Cli­mate Lobby Canada recently hos­ted a call with Simon Sharpe, man­aging dir­ector of S-Curve Eco­nom­ics. The topic was how we could decar­bon­ize five times faster if we stop treat­ing the eco­nomy as a static sys­tem and lean into its dynamic nature. Cor­rect­ing a fun­da­mental flaw: Most eco­nomic the­ory assumes equi­lib­rium, that mar­kets settle into stable states and respond pro­por­tion­ally to policy sig­nals. But the real eco­nomy, like the human body, is never in equi­lib­rium. It is con­stantly adapt­ing to incent­ives, con­straints, and shocks. Cli­mate change exposes the danger of this flawed assump­tion. When we shift from pre­dic­tion to risk assess­ment, the stakes become clear. Feed­back loops such as melt­ing ice redu­cing albedo, thaw­ing per­ma­frost releas­ing meth­ane, and the weak­en­ing of major ocean cur­rents pose exist­en­tial risks. But here is the hope­ful part. The eco­nomy has feed­back loops and tip­ping points, too. Unlike cli­mate sys­tems, we can design them. Amp­li­fy­ing pos­it­ive feed­backs: Effect­ive cli­mate policy amp­li­fies pos­it­ive feed­backs rather than dampen­ing them. Tar­geted sub­sidies are espe­cially power­ful early in a trans­ition. The les­son is simple. Build first, then break. Solar adop­tion in China and Pakistan provides real-world examples. Reg­u­la­tion drives innov­a­tion: Reg­u­la­tion is often framed as a bur­den, but it is fre­quently an innov­a­tion cata­lyst. When gov­ern­ments set clear rules, such as zero-emis­sion vehicle man­dates, they force cap­ital to real­loc­ate within firms. Engin­eers innov­ate. Sup­ply chains adapt. Com­pet­it­ive­ness shifts. Once clean tech­no­lo­gies enter the steep part of the S-curve, change accel­er­ates faster than fore­casts pre­dict. Taxes used stra­tegic­ally: Sharpe reframes car­bon taxes away from abstract ideas like the social cost of car­bon and toward rel­at­ive prices. The evid­ence is com­pel­ling. In Nor­way, EV sub­sidies com­bined with taxes on gas­ol­ine vehicles made elec­tric cars cost-com­pet­it­ive at pur­chase, and now EVs are 96% of new car sales. Taxes are most effect­ive mid-trans­ition, when altern­at­ives exist, and price sig­nals can decis­ively tip the sys­tem. Canada's use of sec­tor-spe­cific pri­cing demon­strates this real­ity in prac­tice. Canada and the coali­tion of the will­ing: His­tory shows that pro­gress accel­er­ates when a coali­tion of the will­ing moves first. Canada is act­ively for­ging such part­ner­ships. It works with the European Union, the United King­dom, China, Indone­sia, and Cali­for­ni­a­a­ligned U.S. states that could soon tip key sec­tors onto the steep part of the clean energy S-curve. In a static world­view, cli­mate dip­lomacy looks like a zero-sum game: who pays, who loses com­pet­it­ive­ness. But the real eco­nomy is dynamic. As clean tech­no­lo­gies scale, each adop­ter lowers costs glob­ally and increases returns for every­one else. Cooper­a­tion is self-rein­for­cing. When we shift from pre­dic­tion to risk assess­ment, the stakes become clear. Feed­back loops such as melt­ing ice redu­cing albedo, thaw­ing per­ma­frost releas­ing meth­ane, and the weak­en­ing of major ocean cur­rents pose exist­en­tial risks.
