As a programmer who works on business software, I hate AI for many reasons: AI code is badly written, people using it can't maintain it, the tools that generate it are environmentally disastrous and financially unsustainable - but not because AI code takes the "soul" or "humanity" out of the work.

thinking tonight about Last Resort, the prime time American TV series which began with the noble commander of a boomer submarine taking the US hostage with nuclear blackmail in response to an order to launch on a neutral country and ended with the heroes successfully assassinating the POTUS

I don't do QTs of people I don't know, but I think the series Manhattan has a reverse-GOT in that its finale retroactively makes the whole show better. I was genuinely astonished when it hit credits. Apparently the show was intended to continue and canceled, but I can't imagine it.

I have spent the last like 2 weeks modding dark souls 1 for the first time with custom boss music of my choice (and a friends help), sound effects and now some texture changes

"people constantly talking about AI through the lens of digital proudhonism" is very low on the list of annoying things I'll be happy to see diminish once AI explodes but it nonetheless very much is on that list

Human life was valuable only in one sense. Suddenly any person was a unit of labor for the factory system, roughly equivalent to all others, and was therefore a transferable resource.

on the anniversary of December 12, 2012, the day that the Mayan long-count calendar said the world would end, please remember the harbinger of a similar doom that appeared spontaneously poster-sized in the back room of a Nintendo store:

watching a mediocre period drama and there was a scene in which a rich man sneered and said "...Methodists..." with the same level of disgust that in other scenes similar people curse "Jacobins". this might well be accurate but it was also very very funny

If you're looking for an Udo Kier film to watch, may I recommend BACURAU (2019), starts off like a worthy slice of sociopolitical realism and ends up as demented Brazilian neo-western exploitation. Don't read anything else, just see it. Contains one of my favourite film moments of the 21st century.
