The Shedd Aquarium in Chicago has undergone some dramatic upgrades to their freshwater and marine tanks. It is an even more amazing place to visit- obviously their Madagascar collection could be bigger 🥲

Years ago, 20 yrs, I had no clue these fish would be endangered or extinct. What does it mean to you to go through generational amnesia and forget what used to exist?

Few specimens of Paretroplus nourissati remain in captivity, in fact, no large institution in the world keeps the species. With a rapidly declining wild population, every spawn of this species is a gift

One of the most intriguing cichlids is this impressive Heterochromis multidens, males have an impressive nuchal hump. Iris coloration is also different between males and females

Pachypanchax species appear to be susceptible to lymphocystis infections (LCVD), an iridovirus that infects fish and amphibians. This Pachypanchax male developed what appears to be melanoma. Iridoviruses can infect melanophores causing a marked expression of pigmentation, only males are infected

When you are brightly colored while breeding and hunting fish-eatbirds are about, spawning in a cave is a survival skill. Paretroplus damii guarding a nest as a cave spawner 😍

One of the few species of Malagasy cichlids of least concern when it comes to conservation, Ptychochromis grandidieri. Its ability to live in brackish water keeps this species safe from overfishing and exotic species introductions

Summer is in full swing in Texas, unfortunately that means no eggs or only male fry with high temperatures affecting reproduction in Pachypanchax sparksorum. So the new addition to the Fish Cantina is a small air conditioner 🤩

A beautiful pair of Paretroplus maculatus vying for spawning territory. Communication between specimens is critical to secure a pair and raise offspring. To this date, no scientific research has been done studying this particular species and its ability to sense and produce sound

Last minute spawn before lights out- excuse the dirty glass. Paretroplus nourissati rarely spawns in aquaria due to oversized conspecific aggression
