The natural world is a wonderful place. This is timelapse video from a few years ago of a marine sponge sneezing. It has mucus inside that traps the sort of particles that might clog it up, and expels them in periodic contractions every 3-8 hours. Atchoo!

That’s a 66% decline since 1991, when the rate was 5,140 offenses per 100,000 people. In 2024? It was 1,760.

Fermentation is the chemical connection for day 16 of #ChemAdvent: both Korean kimchi and Inuit kiviak take advantage of lactic acid bacteria fermenting carbohydrates and producing flavour compounds.
