if getting infected gave you any protection, why would people be on their 6th and 7th covid infection?

I've seen many debating what to do if COVID vaccines truly disappear in the US & what they told me in Canada (as I can only safely receive a vaccine our government no longer buys)- is to "get infected to avoid infection" which is obviously bad advice. So, I wear an N95 everywhere in public instead.
