In over 40 years of taking photographs, tonight was my first attempt at capturing lightning.
This was shot hand-held at 24mm 1/30th, f5.6, ISO4000 using manual focus.
It's not the sharpest image, and I know I can do much better. I just hope I get the chance to try again.

With the cost of modern digital camera batteries, rotating them is the best way to extend their life.
Let them run down to <10% before changing them if possible, and then charge them fully. Make sure you rotate them by using them sequentially to keep battery cycles equal.
