Chapter 1 has a lot of work to do and I've generally seen nothing I feel could be cut without hurting its pacing and where it stands as an intro to the story.

Mercifully Chapter 2 is much shorter and out of the mechs. This has been really fun and has pumped me up for even juicier fighting down the line, but it's also the most difficult part of the job so far.
Worth it. But glad to be in character building and chatter saddle for the second chapter
