When someone important to them dies, some children may find it difficult to understand or manage their own feelings. A good idea is to have a ‘safe zone’ where they can go, such as a quiet corner with familiar items that help them to feel calmer.

When a parent dies, older children may have worries about practical things that affect them. Talking about what is happening and involving them in any decision making can help them to feel less anxious.

Saying the name of a child who has died can be very important to bereaved parents. A lovely way to include the child’s name might be to add that you always remember them in a card or message you send to the family.

Grief is exhausting. Understand that your grieving friend may need some quiet time to recharge their batteries so that they can cope better with their grief. Just let them know you’re there for them when they’re ready.

If a friend is bereaved, ask how you can help them.

Practical help, like organising a food delivery, can be really helpful. But sometimes, all your friend may need is someone to just listen.
