I I review Tim Weiner’s new bestseller about the CIA for The Washington Post. He is devastating about George W. Bush and Iraq, definitive about Trump and Russia (Yes they collaborated to elect him), and limp on the tortue committed by the CIA.

It is very telling that NYT editors thought the story here was "it is suspicious that Mamdani said he was African American on his Columbia application" and not "noted right wing troll Chris Rufo wants you to think it's suspicious that Mandani said he was African American on his Columbia application"
The only newsworthy items from the NYT hit on Mamdani are:

1. NYT reporters are apparently chummy with white nationalists who spout eugenics

2. NYT editors apparently believe their peers are trolls like Chris Rufo

3. NYT "standards" for using hacked materials are not actually followed

NYT is continuing to soil itself publicly by failing to recognize and atone for gross errors in editorial judgment. This sort of response is not only utterly unpersuasive, it reeks of arrogance and a sense that the Gray Lady is somehow above it all. It isn't. And it's betraying its readers.

Trump demands that a news organization fire a reporter who did nothing professionally incorrect, but who reported something Trump doesn't like. This is now a routine thing. And the corporate parent of the news organization is usually perfectly content to fire the reporter.
