Did Nuria’s talk get you excited about wilt diseases? Are you in love with lignin? Calling all vascular pathogen fanatics to P-38 in session 1 (presenting Tuesday!). Hear all about how Clavibacter uses CAZymes to break free of xylem vessels and how plants might detect this damage! #2025ISMPMI
The booing of downed players is getting so egregious I’m starting to root for Gotham. We do not boo injured players!! #NWSL #GothamFC #KCBABY

I’m honored to share the illustration accompanying our receptor engineering paper in Nature Plants. Created by the talented Phoebe Sinner from the Coaker lab, this artwork elegantly highlights how natural diversity contributes to differences in receptor specificity.

Washington DC has 702,000 people, is 45% Black and has 0 senators

Wyoming has 590,000 people, is 86% white and has 2 senators

DC needs a state with proper representation, not a military takeover

Missing my fellow Coakerites today! I tried to recreate my favorite MPMI 2023 photo but this time it’s just me 😢. Another reminder of the impact politics has on science and that many incredible academics working in the US aren’t here this year. #2025ISMPMI

Everyone is acting like US scientists will just go get science jobs elsewhere and sure some will but there are not anywhere close to enough science jobs elsewhere.

The end result of this will be much, much, much less science, not science happening in different places.
People are talking about the imminent brain drain of US researchers to other countries but that’s not the only way it’s going to look. There is going to be a brain drain out of science and into other US sectors. There are a lot of non-science things you can do with a Ph.D.

NASA is more than rockets and moonwalks. NASA is behind much of our everyday technology. From space discovery, to Air Jordans, to CAT scans, NASA has played a role. We get it all on less than a penny of every federal dollar. Now their science may be gutted by 50%.

It’s hard to put into words how bad things are/are getting in the U.S. but on a personal note I just realized in be in Europe for #2025ISMPMI during the Euros and that’s pretty awesome.

This this this. There is value in pointing out the specifics but we have to save express interest in saving all of it. A patchwork of funding just what ppl are most passionate about would be a dysfunctional mess
It's not just #NIH. It's not just #NSF. It's not just #NASA.

The whole scientific community has to make clear that all science across fed agencies is being destroyed in the US.

We can't just ask for our particular piece of the pie. The whole pie is being thrown out - saving your bit won't work.

If you think it can’t happen here, remember that it already did. In 1942 soldiers came with rifles to our home and ordered us out. They put us in internment camps. Most of us were citizens.

I went to two supermarkets today and noticed a drastic decline in the amount of fresh produce. Maybe due to reliance on immigrants to pick crops & them hiding in fear. Look at the resources devoted to squashing protests, raiding buildings and a military parade- but not helping the general population

How is it not ABSURDLY injurious to our interests as a nation to cut…. math and physics funding?
Presidential budget is out. Here's NSF. Biggest cut, by amount, is $1 billion, or 66.8%, from MPS (Physics & Math directorate). nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/00-NSF...

I do hate that we leave out USDA in these.

I know it’s about congressional committee oversight of “science”, but ag research within and external to the USDA is also critical and already underfunded compared to other science.

Key food security, animal and plant health, environmental outcomes, etc
This is just a partial glimpse of the destruction of American science by Trump and the GOP.

If you zoom in the text says “growing America”. This administration is certainly NOT growing Agricultural science in the US. USDA grants are frozen since January with no new competitive awards being issued. Furthermore, USDA is also facing a massive reduction in force in the next week or two.
Spotted going up at USDA today…
