The "internet safety" bills being rammed through Congress and state legislatures are this generations equivalent of the Patriot Act β a path for mass surveillance, censorship and surrendering of fundamental rights.

Itβs crucial to recognize this is not hypocrisy. People in power donβt actually want to regulate the business models of these big tech companies, they want to use liberals/leftists rightful anger at big tech to pass sweeping surveillance/censorship laws while letting these companies profit

This misses the key distinction which is that the Online Safety Act (& KOSA in the U.S.) is about punishing, censoring and surveilling *users*. None of these βchild safetyβ laws are about punishing actual big tech companies. Theyβre ONLY about censoring speech, they reward big tech financially
