I love books and animals, and people who love both
I'm no photographer but I like this picture of a brooding pigeon with her mate keeping a watchful eye close by.

The inward gates of a bird are always open.
It does not know how to shut them.
That is the secret of its song...

As between clear blue and cloud,
Between haystack and sunset sky,
Between oak tree and slated roof,
I had my existence. I was there.
Me in place and the place in me.

I share time with birds because they let me depart from myself while making me feel at home in time passing.

But man is a part of nature, and his war against nature is inevitably a war against himself.

Any human face is a claim on you, because you can't help but understand the singularity of it, the courage and loneliness of it.

Nature is amazing
NATURE'S GYRO

A kingfisher's head stays perfectly still as its perch sways in the breeze. Like a built-in stabilizer, this ability ensures precise fishing.

Eastern Bluebird

Softly beauty comes to us.
It often gently whispers.
We have to move past the noise
In order to hear its calm reassurance...

In 2023 at least 960 #birds died in one day due to window collisions at McCormick Place in #Chicago. After applying bird-friendly window treatments, there were just 18 deaths all last fall. Further proof these simple changes work, and work well! It's time communities start making this a requirement.
Bird deaths plummet at McCormick Place Lakeside Center after safety film installed
Crash fatalities down more than 90% this fall with 18 deaths compared to 1,280 deaths in the fall of 2023, Field Museum expert says.

We have so much to answer for.

This talk of making peace with it. Of feeling it and then finding a way through. Of closure. It's all nonsense.

Here is what no one told me about #grief: you inhabit it like a skin. Everywhere you go, you wear grief under your clothes. Everything you see, you see through it, like a film.

A few countries are taking brave, pioneering steps towards radically transforming the lives of animals by representing them in legislation. The EU should add its endorsement as a matter of urgency. #EndTheCageAge #animalwelfare #DelivertheProposal
Tomorrow, the @ec.europa.eu will make a statement about its plans to include the revision of #animalwelfare legislation in its 2025 work programme.

Reshare to call on the Commission to deliver ALL the missing proposals! 🙏

I do not believe in, never have believed in, any “transcendental” spirit above Nature; but there is a spirit in Nature, a cosmogenic spirit, which commands my respect and love; and it is this, perhaps most deeply, which serves to “explain” life, give it “meaning.

I'm finding it so difficult to delete my X account. I've been on it since 2009 and it was the source of so much beauty and taught me so much. It's breaking my heart but I cannot support what it has become.

On nature writing as a marginal literature

‘…nature writing is literature at its most essential. Its tenets are that humans are biological; that we are dependent on the earth, that places are vital to our psyches, and that humans have volumes to learn from nature.’
