1/2 [WEBINAR] Biodiversity is in crisis. To protect and restore nature, we need more funding.

The EU’s LIFE programme has funded thousands of nature protection and restoration projects for more than 30 years.

But is there place for LIFE in the next EU budget?

1/ 🌱 In 2024, the EU made history by adopting the Nature Restoration Law, committing to restore all degraded ecosystems – forests, rivers, seas, farmland, and even cities by 2050.
Now comes the hard part: turning plans into action.

‼️ A draft law supported by 30 members of the Parliament, aims to roll back Romania’s coal phase out and, at the same time, delivers a masterclass in manipulation. The proposed law reopens the possibility of building new coal power plants, as well as continuing the operation of new and existing ones.

1/2 🚩The negotiations around the next multi-year EU budget have started. As part of a new funding architecture, every Member State will create a “National and Regional Partnership Plan” outlining major national investments in key sectors, like energy, agriculture, and regional cohesion.

1/ Communities with populations of up to 30,000 people account for around 95% of all communities currently under Ukrainian control. Yet they often remain invisible to major investors, despite being the very places where the country’s resilience is forged.

🤔If gender equality is truly a key @eib.org priority, why is it guided by a strategy from 2016?
Although @nadiacalvino.eib.org calls gender equality a key priority, the funding doesn’t match the rhetoric. With human rights eroding across the EU & beyond, the EIB needs to update its gender strategy!

1/ Together with @ecodiya.bsky.social, we visited the Ivano–Frankivsk region in Ukraine, where the Danish company Goodvalley (formerly Axzon) runs large-scale industrial pig farms. 🐷

In 2013, the @ifcorg.bsky.social approved the expansion of these operations.

🎤Tomorrow, @nadiacalvino.eib.org – President of @eib.org – presents the EIB Group’s annual results. One issue must not be dodged: the lack of progress on gender equality & inclusion. Despite all its promises, the EIB has still not updated its 2016 gender strategy.

1/ ❄️Every winter reminds us how much energy houses consume. In the Western Balkans, buildings use 40% of total energy due to poor insulation and outdated systems.

The answer is energy efficiency coupled with energy sufficiency.

A recent report from @ceebankwatch.bsky.social reveals a systemic flaw in how EU climate funds are being spent in Central and Eastern Europe, with billions going to incinerators and landfills rather than performance-enhancing initiatives like separate collection of organics 💸🔥
