In a new paper in Nature Medicine we argue that polarization is a serious—and overlooked—determinant of health.

#Polarization is analogous to a preexisting medical condition because it creates a population susceptible to negative influences.

Just a reminder amidst the floodings in Spain that misinformation is prevalent and has costly consequences. False hoaxes claiming hundreds of bodies trapped in parking lots leads authorities astray and potentially endangers life-saving help for others.

Affective polarization (dislike of opposing partisans) is driven more by substantive policy disagreements, not necessarily partisan identity or loyalty, finds Orr, Fowler & Huber.

Interesting results given the rise in the study of identity in politics.
