Enthusiast. Churches and cathedrals, Modernist architecture, music especially Mozart, birding especially swans. My son is a hospital doctor; I once worked in the NHS in health education/public health.
#AdoorableThursday at the Church of the Holy Innocents, Highnam.

Lovely lattice-work porch gates with tiny thorns seemingly carved into the pattern; a reference to the Crown of Thorns?

I may have seen thorn detailing in the work of Sydney Barnsley (look carefully at the vertical sections in pic).

#AdoorableThursday These little aumbry doors, why they are merely framed in the usual modest fashion!

Few surfaces left undecorated, the lectern in the Church of the Holy Innocents, Highnam, was relatively restrained! @notpodium.bsky.social

The wooden screen behind has integral candles, with brass candlesticks on the dado rail (shown most clearly far left).

Also in shot - Minton tiles.

The view over the chancel arch was scintillating. The church was freezing cold, but the atmosphere fizzed with excitement.

Church of the Holy Innocents, Highnam. I don't recall seeing a painting of the Last Judgement, with the haloes raised & gilt, as they are here. @portaspeciosa.bsky.social 🌟

#TilesOnTuesday and a flurry of activity, in the gloriously extravagant Church of the Holy Innocents, Highnam.

Viewing the chancel from the chapel, this church was built by Henry Woodyer for Thomas Gambier-Parry, who also executed the eye-catching wall paintings. A dazzling confection.

Browsing in the Bibliothèque nationale de France, département Littérature et art, took me to some very scary places! Look at those wide-eyed owlets 🦉 @horatioforever.bsky.social

I like the somewhat menacing bats, top right, and the properly fierce dragon, bottom left. But all the bench ends in Harris Manchester College chapel are handsome.
Thank you for that information - most helpful.

a few more benchends

#ScreenSunday I visited for the windows, but was thrilled by the wood carving as well.

If there was a lavish supply of ogee arches & cusping, I could not complain at this Decorated Gothic Revival flavour. Harris Manchester College Chapel, Oxford.

The screen was finely carved by Earp, Son & Hobbs.

The "welcoming" boss on stepping into Harris Manchester College set a positive tone. Oak leaves and acorns very much a symbol of constancy and strength for me.

Wonderful! Can you just go in now, or did you have to arrange a visit?

haven’t been in years & years and would love to go back. Seem to remember having to ask at the Lodge or similar?

@jshellyer.bsky.social If you have more photos of the carvings on the bench ends at Harris Manchester, please do post them.

My efforts were largely on the feeble side; the peacock & fierce bat-creatures were particular "fails".

Pevsner says they were carved by Pearson & Brown of Eccles.

It was a Tale of Two Eagle Lecterns in Harris Manchester College's chapel, in Oxford.

Walking in one was met by the Greeting Eagle, left, & on proceeding to the chancel, the Preaching Eagle (right) pounced upon a person.

Truly a chapel with lavish lectern provision! 🪶🦅@notpodium.bsky.social

@jshellyer.bsky.social I visited Harris Manchester College chapel to see the stained glass, with a slight nervous apprehension in case late C19th Morris & Co glass might be a tiny bit lacklustre.

However, jewel like pinks & blues shone brightly & I was very interested in how the tracery was used.

Harris Manchester College, Oxford, gave us a most hospitable welcome, when we arrived to see the Chapel.

I was quite bowled over by the wood carving & Morris & Co stained glass, 1895-9, by Henry Dearle.

Hammerbeam roof & gorgeous light fittings shown here as well. @stroudstory.bsky.social

At last! The new Botley bridge in Oxford is being installed after the old one was dismantled. It was really exciting to see the construction in progress and to find out how accomplished was the handling of the railway closure.

Taking classes on the Decorated Gothic style of architecture, one becomes so easily obsessed by ballflowers.

I see some angry faces at the top!

Brilliant. I can’t recall these at all, but then again it’s all a bit overwhelming in there (in a good way, of course).

Those capitals look a bit like they used to, or perhaps at one time were destined to, have columns attached to the bottom?

Anyway - here is another Oxford owl, in return

#OwlishMonday These lovely owls welcome visitors in to the Oxford Museum (of natural history) left.

Far right, a squirrel appears to be about to over-indulge in luscious bunches of grapes!

Inside, a forest of capitals dazzles the visitor with their floral & leafy brilliance @iangrebe.bsky.social

#SundayStonework The Oxford Museum's stone carving is some of the finest that I have ever seen.

The botanical carvings in the Central Court prompt awe at the skill of the craftspeople & are both decorative and educational.

The arcading & striped arches are full of energy!
