Enthusiast. Churches and cathedrals, Modernist architecture, music especially Mozart, birding especially swans. My son is a hospital doctor; I once worked in the NHS in health education/public health.
Spot the supplementary internal buttressing in the triforium, in this shot of the interior of Salisbury Cathedral!

This sacred building is not going to collapse, if it can help it. Lavish quantities of Purbeck Marble to right & left add gravitas to the picture. @portaspeciosa.bsky.social

Headstops at the West end of St Mary's, Nottingham.

The face on the right looks well clad for the cold weather, but the stonemasons have given life (left) to a face that seems bundled up in over-sized dishcloths!

The W end was rebuilt in facsimile by the Victorians. @chartresfi.bsky.social

#SundayStonework at St Mary's in the Lace Market, Nottingham.

As the sun went down, these two fine gargoyle beasties still had some spring in their step, as I admired them before heading for home. @chartresfi.bsky.social

Plenty of handsome Perpendicular detail also available.

It's rained all day and been persistently gloomy, but in my heart I am glad, for the brightness of Salisbury Cathedral is stamped firmly in my memory.

Left, an angel photographed on Monday; right, the same angel, in April 2022.

Kept in order on both occasions by @portaspeciosa.bsky.social.

The sights we saw in Clerkenwell in the winter sunshine really exceeded my expectations! @julietlegg.bsky.social

Rosebery Avenue Bridge Viaduct, 1890. Cast-iron supported by buff brick arches & iron rivetted beams. Decorated panels to sides surmounted by pierced railing with trefoil pattern.

#TextileTuesday in Salisbury Cathedral, pausing by this banner, before a 1950 window by Harry Stammers.

It shows Elijah ascending to Heaven (please see next post); this is a memorial to the World War 2 Glider Pilot Regiment. @churchartnature.bsky.social

In Salisbury Cathedral yesterday; vibrant orange flowers in a cool, perhaps austerely simple, setting.

Right, in flower, in my garden today. How these Ribena salvias keep going in the cold I do not know! @horatioforever.bsky.social

#TextileTuesday I am fond of the legend of St Hilda, so I took a photograph of this cushion in Salisbury's Cathedral's Chapter House, as I was ably steered about by @portaspeciosa.bsky.social.

A legend tells of a plague of snakes which Hilda turned to stone, explaining the presence of ammonites.

#TextileTuesday in Salisbury's beautiful Chapter House. The seats for those sufficiently eminent to sit here are elegantly cushioned.

Shown here, a simple boat, and St Hugh's loyal companion, the swan. @horatioforever.bsky.social

Pelican lectern, with a what looks like a sprung bookrest (see right). Thoughts of wobbling faith come to mind!

Certainly I feel worried about possible dents in this noble bird's plumage. A brave brass lectern in St Mary's, Nottingham. @notpodium.bsky.social @thehistorymouse.bsky.social

#Caturday Artists' own greetings cards are often special & this 1885 example is definitely that.

It shows a bird made from an artist’s palette & a cat formed from a tube of paint!

Artist Joseph Crawhall was quiet but was always able to see the humour in everything. @churchartnature.bsky.social

#FontsOnFriday I liked St Mary's, Nottingham. The C15th font's octagonal bowl has miniature window tracery & ogee arches on its faces. It has a palindromic Greek inscription:

NIΨONANOMHM MHMONANOΨIN

which may be translated: ‘Wash away thy sin, wash not thy face only’. @thehistorymouse.bsky.social

"Ooo the rare #PodiumSpotlight 😀"

I struck gold (well brass) again in St Mary's, Nottingham. See the stupendous plinth-podium with carpeted stairs!

This eagle lectern & his attendant lions felt honoured I am quite certain. 🌟

I tried hard to take a photo of the wooden eagle lectern in St Peter's, Brimpton, but it was an epic fail, as I was transfixed by its well-carpeted podium instead. @notpodium.bsky.social

A strong and stable platform I feel; my respectfully distant feet included in photo. @iangrebe.bsky.social

#AdoorableThursday at St Peter's Brimpton, with its extravagant interpretation of the Decorated style.

It's all modesty & restraint by the tower, with a mere sprinkling of ballflowers, right.

But at the vestry door, architect John Johnson really went to town with this ogee-arched creation.

#WindowsOnWednesday in St James the Greater, Leicester.

One of several beautiful oval stained glass windows by Theodora Salusbury; here a radiant communion cup with wafer showing the sacred monogram. Text: “A M D G (Ad majorem Dei gloriam)”. In loving memory of Charles Edward O’Connor-Fenton.

The brilliance of Karl Parsons' East window in St Philip's, Leicester, shines forth in this detail from the tracery, for #TraceryTuesday

Parsons' notes say: "Victory bears the Palm of triumph...The topmost tracery openings are filled by a symbol of the Trinity." @stroudstory.bsky.social

#TextileTuesday I warmed to the elegance of this black swan. It is a beautiful design, with sinuous neck and a single trailing foot so carefully contrived.

Seen in St Laurence's, Tidmarsh, Berkshire. @iangrebe.bsky.social

@3leggedcat.bsky.social @carolineirwin3.bsky.social Pinks & purples in my garden, yesterday.

From left, Queen Charlotte, simple primrose, and magenta hardy salvia blooms, with leaves that have a scent of blackcurrant when gently pinched.

#StaircaseSaturday in St James the Greater, Leicester.

Turn of the century terracotta pulpit, in this sublimely decorated church. I've found a pause in the abundance of angels here, with these leafy delights to guide our way instead. @chartresfi.bsky.social

The sensuous & sacred combined.
