Introduction Valentino is a character defined by intensity. He is often shown exhibiting intense emotions and reactions. During both seasons, he is consistently portrayed as emotionally dysregulated and highly expressive. His reactions display a lack of healthy regulation strategies as along with implied drug use, he is seen turning to violent outbursts and others to stabilize himself. Angel Dust in particular often becomes the person Valentino turns to stabilization through violence, control, proximity, sex, and forced emotional availability. While Valentino’s behavior is abusive and exploitative, it also reveals a pattern of emotional dependence that positions Angel as a form of coping mechanism that Valentino relies on for his emotional regulation. 2. Valentino’s emotional dysregulation, reliance on others to regulate him, and fear of abandonment 3. Violence as an Immediate Outlet for Emotional Overload 4. Why Angel becomes the primary outlet and Object of Emotional Dependency The reason Angel takes the brunt of Valentino’s emotions isn’t just proximity. Valentino’s relationship with Angel is notably different than that of others he has under contract. It is made clear by the narrative that Angel is someone Valentino specifically chooses to keep around. He reacts poorly when Angel puts more distance between them (via moving) and goes through lengths to maintain an open dialogue with him and keep his attention through manipulative texts. He may not love Angel in any traditional or healthy sense, but he does at the very least favor him over others. Angel is Valentino’s ‘favorite toy’ but the attachment goes deeper than sexual use or business utility. He likes Angel. He enjoys his personality, his charm, expressiveness, and vulnerability. There is a layer of genuine attachment and affection that makes Val rely on Angel emotionally. Maybe not in the same way as one would rely on an equal partner but likely more as a bridge relationship where he fulfills other needs Val doesn’t otherwise get. But Valentino’s reliance isn’t only situational. Across both seasons, the narrative repeatedly shows that Valentino depends on Angel’s presence, attention, and availability in order to feel regulated. Valentino’s dependence on Angel is clearest when Angel is absent. In season one, Valentino cycles rapidly through manipulative messages, threats, and emotional appeals to lure Angel back. In season two, his texts rotate between casual familiarity (almost as if they’re friends) and nostalgic manipulation about ‘how things used to be.’ This inconsistency reflects emotional neediness, not just calculated strategic control. Valentino is attempting to pull Angel back into proximity by any means necessary because Angel’s absence creates a void he cannot tolerate. 5. The Gaps Valentino Forces Angel to Fill Because Valentino needs others for external regulation and Angel is his primary outlet, this leaves Angel filling many gaps and functions. What role Angel is playing in this emotional dependency varies from moment to moment, depending on Val’s issue or mood, he becomes a sort of all-purpose coping mechanism. The parts he plays include but are likely not limited to: a punching bag, sexual partner, ego fuel, companion, emotional stabilizer, artistic extension, and even a pseudo-boyfriend. Angel fills Valentino’s need for companionship in ways Vox and Velvette do not. Angel and Val share similar interests like their participation in substances, partying, fashion tastes, performance, and sex work. And Angel matches the aesthetic and lifestyle Valentino glamourizes. Angel is energetic, expressive, fun, and socially fluid, making him feel both easy and familiar to Val. He is someone who can keep up with Valentino, relate to him, and partake in pleasures that Vox (as mentioned in texts Valentino sent to Angel) does not share in the same way. These shared activities create the illusion of compatibility, and to Valentino, this similarity feels like intimacy. Angel is someone who “gets” him in ways others don’t. This makes Angel particularly useful When Valentino wants fun, distraction, or casual closeness, because Angel fits that desire better than anyone else. Angel is also a major contributor to sustaining Valentino’s ego. Not only does he expect or require Angel’s flirting, praise, and attention, but Angel’s career plays an active role. Angel is an extension of Valentino’s artistic identity, he doesn’t only see Angel as a muse, he likely goes as far as to see Angel as his masterpiece and even an extension of himself. Angel’s success as a performer directly reflects on Valentino. Compliments toward Angel are compliments towards Val. Valentino feels ownership over Angel’s work, body, aesthetics, and accomplishments. 6. Conclusion Ultimately, Valentino doesn’t just use Angel, he depends on him. Valentino can’t regulate himself, can’t stand emotional distance, and can’t tolerate the fear of abandonment. He needs someone to anchor him or take his intensity. Angel becomes that anchor. The one person Valentino can always reach for, always control, always lean on when his emotions overwhelm him. That dependency is what makes their dynamic so explosive. Angel isn’t just property; he is Valentino’s emotional safety net. He is the emotional buffer, the outlet, the constant presence Valentino needs to keep himself from unraveling. And because Angel has no freedom to pull away, Valentino turns him into a coping mechanism rather than a person.
