Assistant Researcher | Forbes 30 Under 30 | Bioengineer | PhD from University of Minho and Stanford

Passionate about engineering live-like tissues and new in vitro testing tools.
Whenever I’m invited to discussions on jobs and careers I always state something bold: that I have the best job in the world.

And I always mean it.
For all its flaws, science and academic research really is (in my humble opinion) the best profession imaginable.

My quest to maintain a presence across multiple social networks continues 😂 The scientific community is quite dispersed across platforms.

I've now found a way to publish in the 3 main ones (LinkedIn, X, and Bluesky) at once! Need to do a bit of gymnastics with character counts but great tech 😀

You still have a chance to submit an abstract to Society for Biomaterial's 2026 meeting in Atlanta - deadline extended until the 21st! 📝

If you're working on new 3D models by manipulating cells and biomaterials do consider submitting to the session we're organizing on the topic!

Granter, the Startup winner of this year's Web Summit Pitch contest, has as its core product an AI platform to... prepare Grant proposals!

Solid idea if you ask me. But what does it really say about our funding systems that there's room for such parallel business models to make so much sense?

Wondering what kind of software researchers like to use for preparing schematics/figure drawings? I've used Inkscape a lot in the past, but it's a bit limited in terms of 3D.

Biorender is quick and easy to accelerate concepts but not as great for original content.

What else is out there?

New Paper out! A joint review on Hydrogel Fibers with Zhou's Lab, out now in Bioactive Materials.

Hydrogel Fibers are truly versatile materials across different scales, and their applications in tissue repair and regeneration continue to grow 👇

Very happy to share our latest 3B's publication, online now in @cp-matter.bsky.social 🥳

We took our work in microfluidic-driven biofabrication to a whole new level through 2 major advances (a short thread):

New FCT Research Grant Approved!! 🥳

Very happy to receive notice of funding approval for the IC&DT research grant I proposed as Principal Investigator (my first in that capacity!)

These are the larger national research grants which are attributed on a regular basis in Portugal.

I am somehow for the first time ever reviewing for PNAS and their reviewer instructions include this BANGER of a line:

"The purpose of peer review is not to demonstrate proficiency in identifying flaws"

Print it in eleventy point font and hang it from the hillside. Scream it from the rooftops.
