An interesting discussion in writing group today has me wondering: What are people's norms for students doing *their own* study vs part of the lab's ongoing work?

Their own = they come up with the idea themselves

Curious about RA vs honours thesis vs grad students here too!

New paper! When do children trust others and when do they come up with their own ideas? Kids 8+ considered and weighed each person's confidence to decide whether to form new beliefs.

Children Use the Relative Confidence of People With Conflicting Perspectives to Form Their Own Beliefs
We provide evidence that children sensibly integrate the judgments of different people who disagree according to their confidence. We asked children (ages 5–10 years, N = 92) to make judgments about ...

Does anyone study how kids think about existential issues? Like why do we exist, what is our purpose, etc.

I've got a thesis student interested in this area and I have this feeling like people are doing this work. I want to point her in the right direction!

Ever wondered if kids use words like 'um' in a meaningful way? New research led by Eloise West @ubcpsych.bsky.social suggests yes! Kids aged 5-8 used more fillers, hedges, and pauses when they were ultimately inaccurate.

Do Young Children Use Verbal Disfluency as a Cue to Their Own Confidence?
Metacognitive reasoning is central to decision-making. For every decision, we can also judge our trust in that decision, or our level of confidence. The mechanisms and representations underlying reas...

I'm so excited to announce the launch of my lab, the Centre for Developing Minds! Follow our new account for updates about the lab and our work!
Welcome to the Centre for Developing Minds at Algoma University, led by Dr. Carolyn Baer! 🎉

Our research explores how children navigate confusing information. We'll be conducting studies with school-aged children in and around Brampton and sharing research updates here!

Hey #DevPsy: I'm looking for participant database recommendations! 🔍
Must be inexpensive, easy to use and have the option to store data only in Canada.
Most previous labs used FileMaker, are there others?

It's new job day! 👩‍🏫
You can now find me at Algoma University in Brampton as an Assistant Professor of Psychology.

Can someone who uses GLIMMPSE for power analyses advise on what to include in a preregistration?
As far as I can tell, there is no effect size since you put in means directly, so how do you communicate the parameters of your expected effect?

Does anyone use a consent form with nice visual elements and simple language? I'm looking to prep a new IRB app and the template is so sterile and GRE-wordy.
E.g. must make sense to busy parents who speak English as a second language.
Can this even pass IRB if I go off-template?

What a dream position!
Postdoc opening! UC San Diego’s Dep. of Psych w/ Dr. Caren Walker. The position is part of an NSF-funded collaborative project collab with myself, Igor Bascandziev, & @patrickshafto.bsky.social, examining the cognitive mechanisms of guided instruction in early elementary school STEM education.

Today's good mood is brought to you by reviewing a paper that is acceptable without revisions! It feels so nice to submit a review that says "this is great, good job."

Hey #PsychSciSky, looking for advice on grant budgeting (esp if in Canada):

How do I justify paying my RAs above the "university standard rate" (which is what every sample grant I have says).

Just list a higher rate? Budget more hours or more positions than I need? Rant about equity?

Did I just join another social media site so that I can only post once every few months?

Why yes, yes I did.
