Sometimes Duolingo #Yiddish has its finger on the pulse of the world…

Duolingo #Yiddish continues to offer incredibly useful conversational phrases. (But, I mean, what ARE the Lithuanians celebrating today?)

Turns out prairie dogs are even MORE important than we previously realized for supporting healthy grassland communities. All it took was an RC taxidermied badger to find out. (Read the thread to see a picture of said wonder).
So excited to share this paper, lead-authored by newly-minted Dr. Andrew Dreelin from my lab and @andyjboyce.bsky.social's with you all! 🧪

There's this paradox about prairie dog towns - many birds seem to love them, but they attract a lot of predators.

Enjoying listening to @hwinkler4real.bsky.social ‘s memoir as I drive, I pulled up to a red light to see this license plate on the car in front of me.

@birdspot.bsky.social This view from today at Whitewater Draw made me think of that gorgeous little painting you made a bunch of years ago.

I’m reading the Joe Taylor biography and am enjoying figuring out old bird names, such as Man O’ War bird (Magnificent Frigatebird) and Darby Flycatcher (Great Kiskadee). Figuring out “New Mexican Duck” sent me to the 1946 archives of The Auk. Bird names change. People adapt. #BirdNamesForBirds

My Duolingo Yiddish has progressed enough that this morning I was able to ask the feral cat in my back yard, “Do you come here often, my cat?” (She meowed at me in response.)

I recently got to talk with journalist Hannah Yasharoff on behalf of the @ababirds.bsky.social about my thoughts on birding and Gen Z. (Special shout out to Kenn Kaufman, who I invoke towards the end of the article).

Birdwatching is having an unexpected renaissance, helping a younger generation relax and connect by getting out into nature.
