Recording moths regularly here in East Cambridgeshire, in my garden and in the local area. Occasionally venturing to Suffolk, Norfolk and Hertfordshire.
This Alder Kitten last night was without a doubt, the star of the catch last night, which featured 69 species. Not only is it new for the garden, but it's one I've never seen before. Fordham, East Cambs

Moth trapping is dismal here in the East. Cool breezy nights are killing it. Thankfully a few bonus Caloptilia to the net at dusk on the patio. Caloptilia rufipennella & almost certainly Caloptilia falconipennella both new for the year and brings me upto 36sp for 2025. #mothsmatter #teammoth

2nd window of opportunity for the garden moth trap. 2 moths on Tuesday night & 1 last night. Super slim pickings sadly. But 2/3rds of the catch were newbies, as is expected in January! 5 species for 2025 now. Fordham, East Cambs #teammoth #mothsmatter

And so it begins. The 2025 list starts with a single Winter Moth attracted to my actinic light. Mild at 12c but quite breezy sadly. Fordham, East Cambs. #teammoth #Moths

A new Oemospila species from Malaysia recently described by French Coleopterist Philippe Jacquot. The paratype of which resides in my collection, and only known from a couple of specimens.

Moth traps on location this year. Stiffkey Marsh and Cranwich Camp (both in Norfolk) were new sites for me this year. The third photo is from a wet woodland site I regularly trap at in the far east of Cambridgeshire.

It's been a while but here are my best Moths of 2024, both in the garden, locally and from further afield. 70 new species made it on the garden list, as it pushes towards 900sp.

Black-spotted Chestnut from a couple of weeks ago, a rather localised and lovely looking species with the most bizarre distribution that makes no sense. Fordham, East Cambs. #teammoth

A quartet of tiny brown jobs, aka the Light Brown Apple Moth or LBAM or if you fancy latin, Epiphyas postvittana. There were 8 found in and around my trap on the 16th of November, an extremely good year for them here in East Cambs. These were all males.

A fluffy male December Moth from my garden on Friday night. Trap put away during the current cold spell.
