Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.

In an executive order, Trump targeted the Smithsonian and the National Museum of African American History & Culture suggesting that it is “divisive” and pedaling “improper ideology.”

So, I took a trip back to the museum, and what I saw was a place trying to tell the unvarnished truth about America.

Before NPS terminated its agreement with my program, I planned to write about Pauli Murray on my park’s site using language about gender identity from the Pauli Murray Center. Quickly learned from the higher ups that it wasn’t going to happen.
"Jesse Huddleston, board chair at Durham’s Pauli Murray Center, said they first noticed the website page deletion yesterday. The edits are part of a federal sweep of NPS content related to LGBTQ+ history; an NPS page for Pauli Murray’s home appears untouched so far."

We need public history practice now more than ever. We must foster critical thinking, facilitate difficult dialogue and center human dignity. We must believe, support, and empower people whose lived experiences are marginalized and dismissed. We must preserve connection and community. And we will.
