Glad to see this is now published. The best study on Balaam that I came across while researching for my Numbers' commentary.

The Man of Opened Eye
Higher critical studies of the last century have raised important questions regarding the unity of Numbers 22–24. Balaam’s multifaceted profession, for example, is often considered a marker for blende...

It was absolutely wonderful to have Peter Altmann and @caioperes.bsky.social on the podcast today to discuss their Commentary on Numbers from @ivpress.bsky.social! Look for that episode to be on Patreon 15 December and everywhere else Christmas Eve.

They are finally here. This is the result of a couple of years of intense work on my part and many other years by Peter. It is an unthinkable achievement for me. I truly hope to have contributed significantly to the academia and meaningfully to believing communities.

This one is now published online. This is my response to views that the Priestly writings advance privilege and power. I show that Priestly cultic instructions align well with utopian and democratizing ideals critical of every form of centralized systems of power. brill.com/view/journal...

Yes! A huge win for me. My thesis goes very much against the academic consensus about the political theology of the Priestly tradition. But I really believe in what I've written.

I just read Genesis 49:25 yesterday and for the first time I thought that this might refer to the deity, meaning that El Shadday has breasts and womb to bless.
In Luke 11:27, the woman's saying, "Blessed are the breasts that you nursed and the womb that bore you," reflects a tradition found in the Targums, such as Neofiti and Pseudo-Jonathan on Genesis 49:25 ... #intertextuality #bible #criticalbible

I will follow Madison here and share how I narrate my personal identity, experience and theology that inform or can influence my approach to the biblical text. This is part of the Auhor's Preface in the new Tyndale volume on Numbers I coauthored with Peter Altmann, to be published January 2025:
Ruth Anne Reese and I are finishing up our work on *The Later New Testament as Christian Scripture* this month. For the introduction, I narrate my theological identity in this way… 🧵

Neste Advento, estou propondo reflexões a partir de quatro cânticos de mulheres que encontramos na Bíblia. Neste segundo domingo do Advento 2024, a reflexão é sobre o Cântico de Débora e as imagens de violência de Jael contra Sísera.

This number is not historical at all, as Sanders only refers to Josephus here. A minimalist estimation of Jerusalem's population in the first century CE is about 20,000 people. Could anyone point me to a more historical study of the number of *priests* in Roman Judea?
Just read in an article that there were 20,000 priests in Jerusalem in the first century CE. I know this was absurd. Checked the footnote that lead me to E. P. Sanders, The Historical Figure of Jesus. Sanders says there *appears" to have been 20,000 priests and Levites (not just in Jerusalem).

Evangelical men tend to fail the test miserably. The sequence of 3 chapters, David's rape of Bethsheba, Nathan's parable, a test, and Amnon's rape of Tamar, should be clear enough about the intentions of the biblical narrative. Even more, we should read Samuel-Kings in light of Hannah's Song.
I never knew that the Bible doesn’t say Bathsheba was on the roof! @carmenjoyimes.bsky.social’s ‘Take Another Look at Bathsheba’ revealed the text as a Rorschach test, exposing what readers see, and reveals what God sees—a victim of sexual violence. This paper was masterclass of exegesis.

Best thing on William's review was his take on Peterson's gender binarism as the natural basis for every kind of power dynamics:

"most serious discussions of gender fluidity... are asking for a more painstaking attention both to the social construction of roles and to the specifics of dysphoria".

Next sunday I will be preaching on Ana's Song. I included a small paragraph to make sure women who desperetly desire to be biological mothers not to feel ashamed of their desire and for women who are not interested at all in biological children not to feel ashamed of their choices either.
