Blue Max
Take Zaxxon, tweak the gameplay and shift the setting from deep space to World War One, and the result is the brilliant Blue Max. One of the C64’s standout early titles, it’s absorbing, fast-paced and highly playable - even today.

Batman: The Movie
This multi-stage adaptation of the Tim Burton film, combining platforming, driving and shooting sequences, has varied gameplay, decent graphics and an excellent soundtrack. One of the better movie tie-ins on the old breadbin.

Blackwyche
Blackwyche casts Sir Arthur Pendragon adrift on a cursed, multi-deck galleon, mixing arcade adventure action with puzzle-solving and a satisfyingly spooky atmosphere. Very reminiscent of TSOK and Entombed, but still a highly enjoyable game.

Batalyx
This typically trippy Minter title is both batshit bonkers and beautifully brilliant. Blending arcade blasting with Jeff’s trademark surreal visuals & pulsating sound, it’s utterly unique and pure Llamasoft in all the best (and weirdest) ways.

BC’s Quest for Tires
Released way back in 1983, BCQFT is a straightforward, pick-up-and-play game featuring charming, cartoony graphics and plenty of daft humour. Its simplicity makes it immediately enjoyable, but it does run out of road after a while.

Bozo’s Night Out
Stuffed with Taskset’s signature humour, BNO tasks the player with safely guiding the titular hero home to bed (avoiding coppers, skinheads & angry old ladies) after a heavy night in the boozer. A simple but very entertaining experience.

Battle Valley
In this Silkworm-esque shoot-’em-up you pilot tanks and helicopters to capture enemy bases and neutralise stolen missiles. With solid graphics, great music and lots of hectic action, it was excellent value at just £2.99 back in 1988.

Big Mac The Mad Maintenance Man
Not a McDonald’s licence game, but a very playable platformer. The graphics and sound are simple, but the level design is solid and the gameplay is instantly addictive. A cracking early budget release from Mastertronic.

Bounder 2 (Re-Bounder)
Featuring sharper visuals, multi-directional scrolling, added blasting elements and more forgiving gameplay, Re-Bounder expands on the excellent original in all the right ways. If you loved Bounder, you’re bound to love the sequel!

Bobby Bearing
Like Arkanoid, Marble Madness spawned numerous home computer clones, and with clever level design and atmospheric exploration-rescue-and-puzzle gameplay, Bobby Bearing (despite the lack of sound and monochrome graphics) is pretty good.

Batty
A wave of Arkanoid clones swept across the C64 scene in the 80s. While Batty may lack originality, its excellent 2-player co-op gameplay more than makes up for it, cementing its place as one of the most playable & enjoyable examples of the genre.

BC2: Grog’s Revenge
BD2GR takes the original game & expands it into a collect-’em-up adventure as Thor hunts for the meaning of life across rugged mountains & dark caves. Excellent cartoon-style graphics & engaging gameplay make for an enjoyable title.

Bangkok Knights
System 3's B.K. was stunning in 1987, boasting huge, well-animated sprites, cool backdrops & an outstanding Rob Hubbard soundtrack. Sadly, its shallow gameplay lets it down, leaving it technically impressive but short on long-term appeal.

Booga-Boo (The Flea)
I have a soft spot for this as it was one of the first games I played on the C64. A neat concept with tough yet addictive gameplay and nice graphics, it’s challenging but captures that ‘one-more-go’ gameplay very effectively.

Bomb Jack 2
BJ2 (oo-er!) is a quirky sequel that swaps the bomb-collecting arcade gameplay of Bomb Jack for more of a platformer/beat 'em up hybrid. With nice music and animation, and better gameplay than C64 Bomb Jack, it’s a pretty decent title.

BMX Kidz
Inspired by Excitebike on the NES, BMX Kidz swaps motorcycles & dirt tracks for BMXs & urban stunt courses. With tidy graphics, a superb Hubbard soundtrack & plenty of playability, it’s highly enjoyable - especially when played against a friend.

Blasteroids
10 years after Atari’s original vector graphic classic hit the arcades, this sexed-up sequel arrived on 8 & 16-bit home computers. The C64 version's graphics & sound are solid, and while it lacks longevity, it’s a good blast for an hour or so.

Bomb Jack
Although it’s nowhere near as good as the arcade original, C64 Bomb Jack is certainly enjoyable. While the squashed-up play area is a bit of a letdown, the graphics are colourful, the music is great and it’s immediately addictive.

Battle Through Time
This Moon-Patrol-inspired-shooter-with-a time-travelling-twist is pretty impressive for 1984. With nice graphics, music & sound effects and challenging but highly playable gameplay, it’s one of the best games of its kind on the C64.

Beyond the Ice Palace
This Ghosts N’ Goblins-inspired platformer from Elite has decent graphics, good tunes & is instantly playable. Unfortunately, it’s way too difficult, turning what could’ve been a very good game into an ultimately frustrating one.

Black Thunder
Borrowing heavily from Loco & Suicide Express, Black Thunder is technically impressive (fast scrolling, split-screen action & great sound) but the gameplay is far too difficult, and ultimately it feels like a case of ‘seen it all before’.
