The right section presents a story involving Severin and the Witch in Russian, with an English translation written below. The different nouns are colored distinctly to aid the reader. Severin reads the Witch's book in the forest. Северин читает книгу Колдунье. Severin reads the book to the Witch. Северин превращает Колдунью в белку с помощью книги. Severin transforms the Witch into a squirrel with (the aid of) the book. Lower left section: Колдунья превращает Северина в белку. (The Witch transforms Severin into a squirrel.) DECLENSION - Склонение Nominative Case (nom) - Именительный падеж Indicates the subject of a verb and is considered the “dictionary form” of a declined word. Genitive Case (gen) - Родительный падеж Indicates possession of a noun by another. Dative Case (dat) - Дательный падеж Indicates the indirect object of a verb- which is the recipient of an action. Accusative Case (acc) - Винительный падеж Indicates the direct object of a verb. Is identical to the nominative or genitive cases in many words. Instrumental Case (ins) - Творительный падеж Indicates the means by which an action is accomplished. Prepositional Case (prep) - Предложный падеж Indicates the location of an action, used after prepositions. Пример: БЕЛКА (Example: SQUIRREL) им. белка (singular), белки (plural) р. белки, белок д. белке, белкам в. белку, белок тв. белкой, белками пр. белке, белках NOTE: Some nouns can be declined for a case other than these six, though occurrences are uncommon. e.g.: лес (forest) can take the locative case: лесу A brief, non-exhaustive set of notes about verbs in the Russian language. Drawn 13 June 2024. SOME NOTES ABOUT RUSSIAN VERBS: Conjugations There are two conjugations in Russian: I: Typically infinitives ending in -ать, but also -ять, -еть, and otherwise most verbs. e.g.: желать (to wish), думать (to think) II: Typically infinitives ending in -ить. NOTE: There are MANY exceptions; some verb stems are conjugated differently, though predictably based on syllable stress and/or the presence of some consonants. Linguist Андрей Зализняк (Andrei Zaliznyak) identified 16 verb classes. Aspect - Вид Russian verbs often come in aspectual pairs: говорить (imperfective) / сказать (perfective) – to speak, talk превращать (imperfective) / превратить (perfective) – to change, transform Some perfective verbs are formed by adding a prefix to their imperfective counterparts: читать – to read почитать – to read (for a while) прочитать – to read (an entire work) Reflexive Verbs When a verb refers to the subject, conjugate as normal then add -ся after consonants, -сь after vowels. THE BASICS Personal pronouns (nominative case): Singular: я (1st), ты (2nd), он/она/оно (3rd) Plural: мы (1st), вы (2nd), они (3rd) Present tense (for imperfective verbs): Conjugation I – Drop -ть and add suffix. Singular: -ю (1st), -ешь (2nd), ет (3rd) Plural: -ем (1st), -ете (2nd), -ют (3rd) Conjugation II – Drop vowel & -ть and add ending. Singular: -ю (1st), -ишь (2nd), -ит (3rd) Plural: -им (1st), -ите (2nd), -ят (3rd) Future tense (for imperfective verbs): Conjugate быть (to be) for future tense and follow with the infinitive (compound future). e.g.: буду читать – I will read. For perfective verbs: Use the present conjugations listed above. Perfective verbs may not occur in the present tense, something can not be completed if it is happening now! e.g.: прочитаешь – You will read. Past tense: Drop -ть and add suffix. Masculine: -л Feminine: -ла Neuter: -ло Plural: -ли Спасибо, Тихон!
