What happened to @lauratmurphy.bsky.social and her team is really quite shocking, if unfortunately not surprising. A long report here, but it merits careful reading. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Sheffield Hallam University appeased China Govt to protect its income from Chinese student enrollment.

It shut down research into forced labour and human rights abuses, intimidated academics, suppressed academic papers.

Outrageous. Universities functioning as corporations. Must be investigated.

There were hundreds of university labs with highly trained staff up and down the country sitting idle that could instantly have been converted to testing, at minimal cost. It was obscene that this did not happen.

The ITV exposé on COVID now turns its sights on testing. I was stunned in 2020 when Sir Paul Nurse - Director of the Francis Crick Institute - told me he’d written to the government to offer the services of the Crick (the biggest biomeolecular lab in the country) - and never got a reply…

The #REF2029 has called a #pause, so there's a delay in the publication of guidance modules. But the final submission deadline remains the same. Don't be tempted to stall - time to select and develop your front-running #impact case studies. Want any help? Email kristine.pommert(at)bulletin.co.uk.

We now know a lot about what excellent ICSs look like. And it's not difficult, using information that's been in the public domain for yonks, to identify and compare stronger with weaker ICSs. So there's little need to pause on that front, nor any known reason for most HEIs to change course. 3/7

This is our reading too. It would not be sensible to pause work on #impact case studies for the #REF2029 now, particularly as there seems to be no plan to extend the final deadline.
Outputs & Impact Case Studies (ICSs) look to be areas with most continuity with the past REFs, if you remove portability and 'diversity of outputs' from the picture. So it seems sensible to focus on them.

Lots of information in the MP reports. It's always surprising how few people read them. 2/7

Some (no doubt annoyingly) glass-half-full reflections on REF2029 pause, for academic and PS staff involved in HEI submission(s).

If, like me, you're having to deal with the hiatus in the known unknowns, what's a viable approach to take? Some very preliminary thoughts. 1/7

So, other than taking any consultations we're invited into seriously, maybe 'pause' is a good time to step back and focus on what's actually of value.

Are 'dry run' exercises on that list? Hmm. Probably not. Is actually enabling/doing/supporting research on that list? Hmm. Emphatically yes. 7/7

I saw an internet post where someone was marvelling at how expensive accessing a journal article was, and how they at least hoped that the authors were being paid well by the journal for their hard work, and oh no I have some terrible news
