Wild caught! Wow, I don’t recall ever seeing these breaded beauties on Jacques Cousteau, Nat Geo, or Animal Planet.

The February photo from @bugeric.bsky.social and my calendar we make for family is this close-up of a gall caused by a tiny wasp in the genus Acraspis on a Chinkapin Oak leaf. #insects #galls #macrophotography

I can’t bring myself to cheer for the Seahawks. I grew up in Portland, Oregon, and I always had the feeling that Seattleites looked down their noses at us.

Another artist worth following. ❤️
Sketched an intersection from a coffee shop window. Made a viewfinder ouy of an index card so I didn't have as much of a "Fisher Price" problem with everything being too big and close together!

Oh, boy. This deserves a LOT more reposts than it has right now. Riley Black deserves more followers, too.
It’s infuriating and dispiriting how cozy scientists and science communicators were with Epstein. Not just creeps like Krauss and Horner, but former SciAm editor-in-chief Mariette DiChristina corresponding with Epstein in 2014-2015. “He’s done so much for science, I think that deserves some fun!”
BU COM dean corresponded extensively with Jeffrey Epstein in 2014 and 2015, files show
Mariette DiChristina, dean of Boston University’s College of Communication, corresponded extensively with Jeffrey Epstein in 2014 and 2015. The two set up a one-on-one meeting, had “phone dates” and D...

Remembering Another Mentor
I had intended to make this post years ago. The subject deserves better. He is the late Leonard L. Wiley of Portland, Oregon. Though my rela...

I won’t repost photos that are lacking ALT text; but now I’m debating whether to just unfollow those photographers who don’t use it. I can be so ethical as to also be petty.

Almost forgot about the public hearing on a special use permit for CoreCivic to operate a vacant prison as an ICE detention facility. Looks like a done deal by how much supportive testimony. Leavenworth, Kansas, USA isn’t just hopeless, it’s toxic. Please get me out!

Much of what is said in this Substack essay applies to why I advocate for insects.
Why have I adopted #bird conservation as my focal cause?

I could just say "I like birds" but I wrote more words (in my mostly dormant personal blog).

On birds, but also on staying motivated when one lives itinerantly, enjoys learning, thinks about ethics, etc.

Puppy Bowl should have penalties like “ineligible retriever down field,” and “unsportsmanlike tail wagging.”

Krystle is also profiled in my book, Bugwatching: The Art, Joy, and Importance of Observing Insects.
Great interview with Krystle Hickman, a wonderful photographer & community scientist who I'm lucky to know. She first learned about native bees as an adult and is not a trained scientist, and has since made important scientific contributions and inspired countless people (including me). 🌿🐙📷 #BugSky

I learned yesterday that I was unsuccessful in registering for a table at the annual Bug Fair in Los Angeles, and I’m devastated. The 40 slots sold out in under two hours. An event like that can sustain my spirits for months, even if I don’t profit financially.
